The documentary has secured an Irish theatrical deal with Breakout Pictures for Autumn of this year.

Phil Lynott: Songs For While I’m Away will explore the life and music of Thin Lizzy lead singer and rock icon Phil Lynott. The feature doc will trace how a young black boy growing up in working-class 1950’s Dublin became one of Ireland’s greatest rock stars as frontman of Thin Lizzy. Lynott who met his untimely death in 1986 at the young age of 36, was born in Birmingham to a Brazilian father and Irish mother.

As lead singer of Thin Lizzy, Lynott and his group enjoyed international success and Reynolds’ documentary tells his story largely through the words of the performer himself. The film also focuses on many of his best-known songs.

The film is directed by Emer Reynolds, director of the Emmy and IFTA Award-winning documentary The Farthest. London-based Eagle Rock Entertainment, which specialises in music documentaries and concert films, is handling international sales.

Speaking on the upcoming release, Director Emer Reynolds said:We are so delighted that Phil Lynott: Songs For While I’m Away - our film about the legendary Phil Lynott - will soon be coming to the big screen! We can’t wait to share it with Irish audiences and to celebrate Philip and his extraordinary life and music.”

Adding to this Phil’s daughters Sarah Lynott and Cathleen Howard-Lynott commented:As always, we are incredibly proud of our Dad and we loved having the opportunity to look at the man behind the music with this film.”

Established in 2019, Break Out Pictures’ previous releases include documentaries Losing Alaska and A Dog Called Money, a creative collaboration between musician PJ Harvey and filmmaker Seamus Murphy.
