Irish Contingent Nominated for Film Independent Spirit Awards 2018
22 Nov 2017 : Nathan Griffin
Nominations for the 2018 Film Independent Spirit Awards were announced Tuesday, November 21st and saw four Irish nominations for the ceremony in March.

This Irish nominations for this year’s awards included Martin McDonagh’s ‘Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri’, which earned him a nomination for Best Screenplay, Barry Keoghan was nominated for Best Supporting Male for his role in ‘Killing of a Sacred Deer’, and Saoirse Ronan was  nominated in the Best Female Lead category for her highly rated performance in ‘Lady Bird’. The fourth nomination went to ‘Lady MacBeth’ for Best International Film, which was produced by Oscar nominated producer Fodhla Cronin O’Reilly.

This year’s Spirit Award nominations saw Independent entertainment company, A24, enjoy the most nominations for the second year in a row with 17, followed by Sony Pictures Classics, which earned 13 predominantly from films ‘Call me by your name’ and ‘The Rider’. 'Lady Bird' earned 4 nominations, 'Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Misouri' earned 3 and 'Killing of a Sacred Deer' earned 2.

The Spirit Awards hold an impressive record of foretelling Oscar winners for a festival that only includes indie and low-budget movies. In fact, the festival has synced up with the Academy Awards Best Picture award for the past four years: Moonlight (2017); Spotlight (2016); Birdman (2015); 12 Years A Slave (2014). This comes with the festival qualifying restrictions that saw ‘La La Land’ frozen out of qualifying last year, as its budget exceeded $20 million. The Spirit Awards also synced up for Best Male Lead (Casey Affleck), Screenplay (Barry Jenkins), and Feature Documentary (O.J. Made in America).

The winners will be announced on March 3rd when the award ceremony airs live on IFC from the Santa Monica beach in California. The ceremony is set to be hosted for the second year, by Nick Kroll and John Mulaney.
