Irish actors Saoirse Ronan and Michael Fassbender have both received another boost to their Oscar nomination chances – both landing nominations at this year’s International Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards (AACTA) - and there was also a nomination for ‘Room’ actress Brie Larson.

Ronan, Fassbender and Larson have also been nominated for SAG and Golden Globe Awards – with the trio widely expected to receive both BAFTA and Oscar nominations when they are announced later in the month. Larson has already been announced as a BAFTA Rising Star nominee.

Nominated for her lead performance in John Crowley’s ‘Brooklyn’ where she plays a young Irish immigrant in 1950’s New York torn between two men and two countries, Saoirse Ronan has so far picked up a New Hollywood Award, a New York Critics Circle Best Actress Award and a BIFA Award for her role in the film.

Also nominated in this category is ‘Room’ lead actress Brie Larson who has garnered unanimous praise for her performance as a woman escaping captivity after seven years with her young son. Both Larson and Ronan are seen as the two favourites to win the Best Actress Oscar by many US publications such as Deadline and Variety.

Michael Fassbender receives his nomination for his complex and layered titular performance in Danny Boyle’s ‘Steve Jobs’ – a role that has garnered him much acclaim with many Deadline and Variety also tipping the actor as one of the favourites to win the Oscar on February 28th.

The AACTA International Awards are voted on by 150 Australians who are members of the organization’s international chapter, with many of them also members of the U.S Academy and BAFTA. This year’s AACTA International Award winners will be announced at a ceremony in Los Angeles on Jan. 29.
