Irish actress Saoirse Ronan will receive the International Star Award at the 27th Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards Gala which will be held on January 2nd.

The International Star Award recognizes an actor or actress who has achieved both critical and commercial recognition across the globe throughout their body of work.

Speaking about awarding Saoirse the award, Festival Chairman Harold Matzner said: ““From her unforgettable roles in Atonement, The Lovely Bones, Hanna and The Grand Budapest Hotel, we have seen Saoirse Ronan grow from a young girl to the accomplished actress she is today. In John Crowley’s new film Brooklyn, Ronan gives a mesmerizing performance as a young woman from Ireland who is offered the chance of a new life in New York. In this role, Ronan embodies the grace and depth of a classic Hollywood screen star.”

Past International Star Award honorees include BAFTA and Academy Award winning actors Javier Bardem and Helen Mirren.

Saoirse’s new film ‘Brooklyn’ is in cinemas now with many publications predicting the actress will receive her second Oscar nomination for her performance as a young Irish immigrant in 1950’s New York who is torn between two men and two countries.

The Hollywood Reporter wrote that “veteran adolescent phenom Ronan works wonders with this exceptional transitional role” and The Guardian described her performance as “marvellous”. Earlier this month, Ronan received a New Hollywood Award at the Hollywood Film Awards for her performance in the film.

Ronan has previously been Oscar- nominated for ‘Atonement’ – a role that also landed her a Golden Globe nomination. Closer to home and Ronan is one of Ireland’s most decorated actresses winning IFTA Awards for her performances in ‘Atonement’, ‘Death Defying Acts’, ‘The Lovely Bones’, ‘The Way Back’, ‘Hanna’ and ‘Byzantium’.

Palm Springs International Film Festival will run from January 1-11, 2016. Check out the trailer for ‘Brooklyn’ below:
