RTÉ has been saddened to learn of the death of former Director-General Oliver Maloney.
Maloney served as Director-General from 1975 to 1978. Before this position, he served as Secretary to the RTÉ Authority, Director of Personnel, and Assistant Director-General. He retired from RTÉ in 1978 at the age of 41.
Noel Curran, the current Director-General of RTÉ, paid tribute to Mr Maloney. He stated, “It is perhaps for his reform agenda at RTÉ that Oliver Maloney will be most remembered, and in his years as Director-General, he paved the way for the launch of RTÉ Two and Radio 2, now RTÉ 2fm. It was the beginning of an expansion that now sees RTÉ operate over 20 distinctive services. I would like to pay tribute to Oliver Maloney, and express my sincere sympathies to his family, friends and former colleagues.”
Oliver Maloney is survived by his wife Connie and his three children, whose mother, Kitty, pre-deceased Maloney. He passed away in Lisbon, Portugal.
