Tom Vaughan-Lawlor stars as Colm in Rialto
IFTA Screen Discussions continues this week with an online discussion of Rialto on Friday at 2pm with Tom Vaughan-Lawlor, Mark O’Halloran, and Peter Mackie Burns. The Academy played host to Arracht writer/director Tom Sullivan and actor Dónall Ó Héalaí on Wednesday, 3rd June.

Continuing on Friday at 2pm, the IFTA Screen Discussions series focuses on Rialto, as actor Tom Vaughan-Lawlor, writer Mark O’Halloran and director Peter Mackie Burns join the Academy for an Online discussion. The event will take place via zoom, including an audience Q&A afterwards.

Described as "An intimate portrait of masculine crisis, illuminated by two extraordinary central performances" by Variety, Rialtofollows Dubliner Colm (Tom Vaughan-Lawlor) who at 46,  has a comfortable life: a managerial job in the city’s docks, two healthy teenage children, and a kind, loyal wife in Claire (Monica Dolan). After the death of his father, Colm’s emotional life cracks open. Unable to confide in Claire, Colm finds himself drawn to Jay (Tom Glynn-Carney), a young 19-year old who quickly becomes his only solace from the pressures he feels.

On Wednesday, IFTA Head of Film and Television Gar O’Brien hosted writer/director Tom Sullivan and actor Dónall Ó Héalaí of Arracht, an Irish language feature film following the story of Colmán Sharkey, a fisherman, a father, a husband, living on the wild shores of Connemara in 1845 as The Great Hunger descends.

Speaking about Arracht at the event on Wednesday, writer and director Tom Sullivan praised everyone who worked on the film, saying “We had 20 days to shoot. Everything we shot we used. It was crazy what we did, but it worked!”. Arracht is backed by Screen Ireland and TG4 through the Cine4 initiative, which promotes Irish language feature filmmaking. Language dominated the discussion too as leading actor Dónall Ó Héalaí stated “The language was true to form. It fits really well and adds a new dimension to Arracht. I have no idea what the Irish soul is, but if it spoke I’d hear it As Gaeilge”.

Irish Academy Members are currently viewing all of the submitted films privately through the Academy’s Viewing Platform during the Awards viewing and voting season throughout June & July. Round One Voting closes July 1st - for Shortlisting of Nominees.

The Academy has extended access for these events to the General Public to hear insights into the work and encourage aspiring creative talent across the country.
