Cannes Round-Up: 'Vivarium' to World Premiere & Host of Irish Productions Selling at The Marche du Film

IFTN brings you a comprehensive look at the Cannes Film Festival and film market including Irish screenings, selling productions and a look at the this year’s Irish Pavilion and the Irish representatives registered to attend.

Over 200 Irish film industry professionals will be in attendance at the Cannes Film Festival in France this weekend in search of worldwide distribution representation and sales at the Cannes Marketplace, while Screen Ireland funded project ‘Vivarium’ by Lorcan Finnegan prepares for its World Premiere.

Screenings

Lorcan Finnegan’s new Sci-Fi film ‘Vivarium’ will screen in Competition as part of Critics’ Week (La Semaine de la Critique) at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival this weekend. The film will compete for the two prizes given by La Semaine de la Critique’s Jury headed this year by Colombian filmmaker Ciro Guerra: the Nespresso Grand Prize for Best Film and the Louis Roederer Foundation Rising Star Award for Best Actor or Actress.

This is the second feature film from Finnegan following his 2016 debut ‘Without Name’, which received its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. The film stars Imogen Poots (‘I Kill Giants’, ‘Sweet Virginia’) and Jesse Eisenberg (‘The Social Network’, ‘Café Society’) as a young couple who follow a mysterious estate agent and get trapped in a strange housing development. The film is scripted by Garret Shanley, who also wrote the script for Finnegan’s ‘Without Name’.

The Pavilion

Screen Ireland has confirm that a host of Irish industry members attending Cannes have register for its ‘Irish Pavilion’, which supplies a central hub for Irish productions screening or selling at the festival as well as providing business, information or social elements to festival and market attendees. IFTN can confirm the attendance of representatives from Irish production companies, festivals, distributors, Sales Agents, Cinemas, Legal and other delegates.

Selling at the Market

The internationally renowned film festival, which is in its 72nd year, runs alongside the busiest global film market, The Marche du Film. Over 200 Irish film industry professionals will attend the Marche du Film along with over 12,000 industry players from over 100 countries. Producers and directors attempting to find funding and distribution networks will mingle with financiers and distributors from across the globe.

Irish films screening at the Marche du Film 2019 include 'Extra Ordinary', directed by Mike Ahern and Enda Loughman, 'A Dog Called Money', directed by Seamus Murphy and 'She’s Missing', directed by Alexandra McGuinness and 'A Girl from Mogadishu', directed by Mary McGuckian.

IFTN has previously reported on deals, which have already been struck for Blinder Films ‘Extra Ordinary’ and ‘A Dog Called Money’, as well as, Technowolfe and Ripple World Pictures’ ‘She’s Missing’.

Speaking about the Cannes Festival and Market, James Hickey, CEO of Screen Ireland said:

European Film Promotion’s ‘Producer on the Move’

At this year’s Cannes festival, Irish producer Cormac Fox of Vico Films was selected for the European Film Promotion’s ‘Producer on the Move’ 2019. Fox is best known as a producer of smash-hit comedy, 'The Young Offenders'. His next project, Irish-Australian co-production 'Animals', directed by Sophie Hyde, will premiere at Sundance Film Festival - London later this month.

Speaking about the announcement, Producer Cormac Fox told IFTN:

"I am delighted to be selected as one of EFP's 2019 Producers On the Move. Many producers whom I admire and respect have been selected for the Programme over the past years and thus it is an honour to be taking part this year at Cannes. I'd like to thank EFP and also Screen Ireland for their much-appreciated support. I very much look forward to the opportunities that being part of this exciting network will present for myself and our selected project Sarajevo Calling.”

The Marche du Film runs from Monday 13 May to Friday 24 May.

The 12-day Cannes Film Festival ends on Saturday 25 May.
