The new three-part series, which airs on TG4 on May 1st, focuses on the power and mystery of the tide.

The series also marks the broadcaster’s first co-production with Chinese investment.

Filmed across four continents, ‘Taoide’ is a visually stunning exploration of one of the most powerful and mysterious natural forces on Earth.

Along with Chinese Production Company LIC, the project was funded by broadcasters TG4, BBC ALBA, BBC Northern Ireland and S4C, and the distribution company Sky Vision. The concept was first pitched at the 2017 Celtic Media Festival.

The collaboration has already inspired the establishment of the new Celtic Development Fund to develop similar co-productions. The series is being distributed in Greater China, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan by LIC and Sky Vision is currently in the process of selling it to other broadcasters worldwide.

This co-production partnership is also a continuation of TG4’s new strategy to develop international co-production partnerships as outlined by Director General Alan Esslemont when he spoke with IFTN back in September. Last year TG4 announced a new partnership with Korean broadcaster Jeonju Sign, which resulted in the successful co-production of recent series ‘An Balla’ (‘The Wall’). The subject matter chosen for these co-production projects are tailored to be universally consumable and hold international appeal.

This year is the International Year of Indigenous Languages, highlighting the importance of nurturing and preserving knowledge in minority languages. Each country which has taken part in the co-production receives its own bespoke edit of the documentaries, in its own indigenous language.

For TG4 TV producer/ director Donncha Mac Con Iomaire partnered the project with Welsh company Cwmni Da to produce the Irish language version for TG4, which is presented by MacDara Ó Cuaig, a scientist with the Marine Institute. The first episode airs on TG4 at 9.30pm on Wednesday, 1st May.

Proinsias Ní Ghráinne, Commissioning Editor, TG4, said:

“TG4 is delighted to join forces with our broadcasting partners in the other Celtic nations to commission an Irish language version of this ambitious series. The theme of ‘Taoide’ has a particular resonance for our island nation that will no doubt captivate TG4 audiences in Ireland and throughout the world.”

Dylan Huws, the managing director of Cwmni Da from Wales, said:

“It was pitched originally to a forum of all the Celtic broadcasters and they all immediately showed interest. Meanwhile, LIC also wanted to be part of it because we wanted to include some Chinese stories as part of the series.’ Dylan says, ‘This is the first time ever that all the Celtic partners have worked together so we’ve created a bit of broadcasting history. Each partner put in around £100,000 which means they’re getting a high-end documentary series which has been filmed all over the world.”
