Lisa McGee's New Channel 4 Series 'Derry Girls' Set to Air This Thursday - January 4th
02 Jan 2018 : Nathan Griffin
The six-part Channel 4 series from the writer of ‘Indian Summers’ is based on McGee’s own experience of growing up in the height of The Troubles.

‘Derry Girls’ is a Hat Trick Productions commission filmed in Northern Ireland, with Michael Lennox (Boogaloo & Graham) as director and Catherine Gosling producing. The show is set to make its premiere on Channel 4 at 10pm on January 4th.

The cast sees Saoirse Monica Jackson in the leading role of sixteen year-old Erin Quinn, living with her uncompromising mother, played by Tara Lynne O’Neill, and long-suffering father, portrayed by Tommy Tiernan. Also seen in the family home is fearsome ‘Granda Joe’ played by Ian McElhinney

Synopsis
It’s the early 90s, and Erin is used to seeing her country on the nightly news and speaking in acronyms (The IRA, The UDA, The RUC). This is a time of armed police in armoured Land Rovers and British Army check points. But it’s also the time of Murder She Wrote, The Cranberries, MJ and Lisa Marie, Doc Martens, bomber jackets, The X Files, Nirvana and Wayne’s World. And while The Troubles may hang over her home town, Erin has troubles of her own.

Lisa McGee, Writer:
“I’m delighted to be able to tell the stories of real people living through The Troubles. And now, with the delicate political ecosystem of the country about to be tested by The Conservatives and The DUP, it seems well worth reminding ourselves how things were not so long ago, and what better way to do that than through comedy?”

Fiona McDermott, Head Comedy, Channel 4:
“Lisa’s warm and brilliantly observed writing coupled with our fantastic cast of new and established comedy talent makes Derry Girls a total laugh-out-loud must-see family sit-com in a very unique setting.”

Jimmy Mulville, MD, Hatrick Productions:
“Having produced Father Ted, it’s a real privilege for Hat Trick to be involved with another brilliant, stand-out Irish comedy this time set in the North. Lisa has written a beautifully authentic and hilarious depiction of family life in Derry during the early 90s and, with her, the experienced team of Liz Lewin, Caroline Leddy and Catherine Gosling Fuller has found a simply fantastic cast.”

The Channel 4 show will broadcast on January 4th, at 10pm.
