Actor Brian Gleeson (Rebellion)
The new five-part series follows up on RTÉ’s recent dramatisation of the 1916 rebellion, retaining several key cast members such as Brian Gleeson, with screenwriter Colin Teevan also on board.

The drama was announced as part of RTÉ’s new season this August alongside dramas ‘Can’t Cope Won’t Cope’ and ‘Striking Out’.

‘Resistance’ will focus on a war between the Irish Republican Army and British forces in Ireland during the War of Independence. Additional acting talent for the upcoming production include Aoife Duffin (My Life for Ireland), Simone Kirby (Alice Through the Looking Glass) and Natasha O’Keefe (Will).

The original ‘Rebellion’ series was nominated for eight awards at the IFTA Film & Drama Awards 2016, with Ruth Bradley taking home the statuette on the night for Best Actress in a Lead Role in Drama.

It earned 619,000 viewers and a 41% share of the available audience for its first episode in January of this year and went on to sell internationally to Robert Redford’s Sundance Channel.

At the launch of ‘Rebellion’ Glenn Killane, who has since moved from RTÉ to Eir, commented on the first-step the series represented for the national broadcaster in entering its Centenary programme. The progression to ‘Resistance’ reflects this ambition for engaging with historical events of the state, on a wider scale.

Glen Killane, Managing Director RTÉ Television:
“Rebellion is a key part of our RTÉ 1916 output, marking the beginning of a series of programming across television, radio and online where audiences can engage with, understand, commemorate and celebrate 1916.”

Further updates on the production of ‘Resistance’ will be published on IFTN in the coming weeks
