RTÉ and NI Screen Seek Writers & Producers for new Online Drama Commissions
31 Aug 2016 : Katie McNeice
Storyland is the award-winning commissioning project designed to promote emerging creative talent in Ireland and is now in its seventh year.

Writers and producers are provided with the opportunity to craft original Irish dramas which are available to a national and global audience on RTÉ Player.

Open days for applicants are taking place in RTÉ, Dublin on Wednesday, September 21st and in The Mac, Belfast on Thursday, September 22nd.

In a change to previous years, Storyland is becoming more focused on the role of the writer. RTÉ and NI Screen will first commission five scripts and work closely with the writers and producers to develop this work.

Writers need not have any previous experience writing for television or film, and are invited from the worlds of television, film, theatre, literature, documentary and journalism. Directors will then be contracted once the scripts have been further developed and are ready for pre-production. In total, five single dramas of up to 20 minutes duration and each with a budget of €30,000 will be commissioned and shown both nationally and internationally on RTÉ Player.

David Crean, Executive Producer for RTÉ Television said:

“Storyland is a hugely important part of RTÉ’s talent development planning. While we want to commission five original dramas that will build audiences for new Irish drama on television, digital platforms and for international distribution, one of our key ambitions for Storyland is to develop a diverse range of voices and attitudes. At this stage of the process we are focused on developing new writing talent and supporting them to develop stories that need to be told on Irish television now. The director will join the process at a later stage of the development process and production teams will then be built around the five commissioned scripts, once they have had the time for development.”

Previous Storyland commissions have gone on to be commissioned for RTÉ TV series in comedy and drama, a feature film, won numerous international awards and have generated additional opportunities, both within and outside of RTÉ for the writers, directors, producers and actors.

Richard Williams, Northern Ireland Screen CEO, said:

“We are delighted to be partnering again with RTÉ for this year’s Storyland. In any medium a great story is central to success and Storyland allows us to develop, and invest in, a new generation of writing talent. We look forward to seeing what great stories and new voices from Northern Ireland will be discovered this year.”
