Filming has just begun on ‘All Black na hEireann’ which tells the amazing story of Irishman Dave Gallaher, the Donegal man who changed rugby forever, who was one of the first captains of the All Blacks.
Director Cathal Ó hUallacháin comments: “It’s an amazing fact that the New Zealand All Blacks rugby team, who Ireland have still never beaten in over 100 years of test matches, owe so much of their evolution to a man from Ramelton, Co Donegal. His statue proudly sits outside Eden Park in Auckland as a tribute to a man who revolutionized the sport before he tragically died in the trenches in World War One.
“His life is a fascinating emigration story and Irish audiences will for the first time be given a chance to learn about a great Irish sporting hero who is truly a sporting legend the other side of the world.”
The documentary is filming on location in Ireland, New Zealand and Belgium and features a variety of contributors from the world of rugby. ‘All Black na hEireann’ will be part of the Cogar strand and is produced by Square One productions (Thomond, Hill 16, Dhá Chúirt) for TG4.
This add to TG4’s coverage of rugby which so far this year has seen the U20 World Cup, Women’s Rugby World cup and will include the upcoming Guinness Pro 12 starting 5th September with Munster v Edinburgh.
