Irish actor Jonathan Rhys Meyers (The Tudors, Match Point) is set to star as an all-powerful magician in superhero movie ‘Mandrake’, based on the character from 1980’s cartoon ‘Defenders of the Earth’.

The Cork actor will play Mandrake the Magician, one of the core members of the cartoon’s superhero team, who was billed as ‘master of magic, spells and illusion’. Chuck Russell, whose credits include ‘The Mask’ and ‘Nightmare on Elm Street 3’, is confirmed to direct. This will be Russell’s first feature since 2002’s ‘The Scorpion King’.

The film, an Omega Entertainment and Baldwin Entertainment Group production, will see Mandrake as an extreme escape artist caught up in a plot of international intrigue and espionage, and will shoot in China and the US in early 2008.

Rhys Meyers has been lighting up the small screen of late in the role as King Henry VIII in Showtime series ‘The Tudors’, currently airing on TV3 and BBC Two. Rhys Meyers has starred opposite Scarlett Johansson in Woody Allen’s ‘Match Point’, opposite Tom Cruise in ‘Mission: Impossible 3’ and stepped into Elvis’s shoes for a Golden Globe winning turn in the 2005 TV series ‘Elvis’.

His lastest movie ‘August Rush’, helmed by Irish director Kirsten Sheridan, will reach our cinema screens on the 23rd November.
