US Rights acquired for Northern Ireland-set Feature ‘’71’
11 Mar 2014 : Deirdre Molumby
Roadside Attractions and Black Label Media have acquired the U.S. distribution rights to ‘’71’, a thriller set in Northern Ireland directed by Yann Demange. The feature premiered last month at the Berlin Film Festival at which it generated much talk. It is being considered for an early 2015 release.

‘’71’ stars Jack O’ Connell (‘Skins’, ‘Starred Up’) as a young British soldier who is accidentally abandoned by his unit during a riot in Belfast in 1971. Trapped for the night and unable to distinguish friend from foe, the soldier must survive alone and find a means of escaping.

The film was shot in Yorkshire last year (read the story here) and co-stars a number of Irish actors including Richard Dormer (‘Good Vibrations’, ‘GOT’), David Wilmot (‘The Guard’), Martin McCann (‘Jump’, ‘My Boy Jack’) and ‘Love/Hate’’s Charlie Murphy, Killian Scott and Barry Keoghan.

This is Yann Demange’s first feature film. He is best-known as a TV director for shows such as ‘Dead Set’, ‘Criminal Justice’ and ‘Top Boy.’ The screenplay was by Gregory Burke, with Warp Films’ Robin Gutch (an IFTA winner who produced the Irish drama ‘Hunger’) and Angus Lamont of Crab Apple producing.

The announcement of the deal was made by Roadside co-presidents Howard Cohen and Eric d’Arbeloff, along with Black Label Media’s Molly Smith. The deal was negotiated by CAA on behalf of Black Label and by Howard Cohen on behalf of Roadside Attractions with Mike Goodridge of Protagonist on behalf of the filmmakers.

‘’71’ is backed by Film4, BFI Film Fund, Screen Yorkshire, and Creative Scotland. Protagonist Pictures is handling international sales for the feature.
