Ripple World Pictures co-founder and producer Jacqueline Kerrin attended last week’s Berlinale Co-production Market, where she and her colleagues Dominic Wright and Marie-Claire Kerrin networked and pitched to some of the world’s top 450 producers, broadcast and studio representatives, financiers, sales agents and distributors. But was it worth it?

Being one of 20 projects selected from 318 submissions, and one of the two Irish companies represented in a co-production market, taking place at an international A-List festival is a huge opportunity. An opportunity to develop existing relationships, forge new ones and a very good platform to launch projects in development into the international market. Participating with a selected project is intense with approximately 30 meetings scheduled back-to-back over two days. The hour for lunch becomes not only a chance to re-fuel but also to network your socks off.

Ripple were pitching the comedy ‘The Valentine Gang’, our second feature with director Darragh Byrne (Parked) written Mark Doherty (Death of A Superhero, A Film With Me In It) and developed with the assistance of the Irish Film Board and the European MEDIA programme. It is about charismatic career criminal Jack Valentine who recruits his brother’s therapy group to rob a bank.

We were sent a list of 75 participants who wished to meet us and were finally scheduled 30. Even though we had a large volume of meetings the quality of each of them was high. We had not met before the majority of the people and companies scheduled. They were all extremely worthwhile potential collaborators and keen to partner on the project if it suits.

Our recently completed supernatural thriller ‘Controra’ came out of participating in the 2011 co-production market, where we met Italian producer Maurizio Antonini and director Rossella De Venuto. The international sales agent for the film will be announced in the lead up to Cannes Film Festival market that takes place in May. ‘Controra’ will be released by Ripple World Distribution later this year. Ripple’s new distribution arm is also behind the release of Alan Brennan’s award-winning sci-fi comedy ‘Earthbound’ on March 15.

This autumn Ripple will shoot an Irish thriller ‘The Beacon’ by established Finnish writer-director JP Siili, who presented the project in the 2012 Berlinale co-production market alongside Ripple World’s long term Finnish co-producing partner Aleksi Bardy. A remote Irish lighthouse location has been recce’d for the shoot. An architect spending time on a tiny lighthouse island off the coast of Ireland discovers the body of a little Asian boy washed up on the rocks. He saves the boy's life, but is soon thrust into a life and death struggle with a violent international drug smuggling cartel.

Our fellow Irish producer in attendance was John Wallace (Dollhouse) from Black Sheep Productions. Wallace was pitching the comedy ‘Scumbot’ alongside the co-writer and director James Cotter (Republic of Telly). The film is being co-written by Ciaran Foy (Citadel) and developed with the assistance of the Irish Film Board. In ‘Scumbot’ a bullied teenager gets an unstoppable robot bodyguard and trouble ensues.

John Wallace agrees that participating with a project in the market is a “worthwhile experience and would encourage other Irish producers to participate”. Wallace also attends Berlinale regularly and last year his feature ‘Dollhouse’ by writer-director Kirsten Sheridan was officially selected for the festival’s Panorama section and received a special mention from the Jury.

Ripple World Pictures and Paper Dream’s ‘Earthbound’ screens this evening at the Jameson Dublin International Film Festival.
