A total 26 TV projects have been successful in Round 42 of the Sound & Vision 4 Broadcasting Funding Scheme, which has seen the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI) allocate funding of €6.4m to Irish projects.

Overall, the round attracted a total of 133 applications, seeking funding in the region of €15.7m. The proposed package of recommendations will facilitate the production of 74 projects (48 of which are for radio) based on Irish culture, heritage and experience, across 27 community, commercial and public service broadcasters.

The funding recommendations also cover a wide range of genres and formats, supporting a diversity of content for Irish audiences, including Irish language / bilingual programming.

Consideration of women in a leadership role is taken into account as part of the assessment process. Between 60% – 85% of the roles for producer, writer, and editor in the relevant funded projects were filled by women. Director and Director of Photography roles continue to favour men, however there was an increase in the percentage of women in these roles when compared with the previous round.

Below are some notable highlights from the 26 TV projects selected from Round 42:

Multi-Oscar-nominated animation studio Cartoon Saloon will produce a new multi lingual children’s series for RTÉjr. Silly Sundays is a 78x7” animated series, which follows cousins Sonia, Hugo and Mel on fun, unexpected adventures at their family get-togethers. Last November it was announced that the series had been greenlit by WarnerMedia Kids & Family to debut on its new Cartoonito preschool block on HBO Max and Cartoon Network.

The series, which received €300,000 from the Sound & Vision scheme is produced by IFTA winner and Oscar nominee Nuria González Blanco (Late Afternoon). Incredibly, the Sound & Vision funding offer will equate to only 3% of the series overall budget, which gives a small insight into the international scale and budget of the animated series.

Blue Ink Films have received a funding offer of €380,000 for their 1x60” drama entitled Twig, which will showcase on RTÉ One. An adaptation of the Greek tragedy Antigone, Twig is set in Dublin’s inner city, with a bitter gangland feud as a backdrop. Twig pits her high moral ground against the mighty Leon and his henchmen.

Funding has been secured for a new bi-lingual documentary about Dublin GAA legend Anton O’Toole. Bankos Tales Productions, who received €72,256 under the scheme, will produce the 1x50” historical-sporting documentary entitled Anton O’Toole – Finsceál de Shaol GAA, which will debut on TG4.

IndiePics’ new three-part documentary series, Until Death? uses the 30th anniversary of the Women’s Aid helpline to look at the issue of domestic abuse and femicide over the last three decade and into the future. The 3x44” format received €345,122 and will be broadcast on Virgin Media One.

Double Band Films have been allocated €126,800 to produce a multi-lingual documentary entitled, Ag Taisteal Siar. The 1x90” documentary, which will broadcast on TG4, will go on a journey to find the last remining guardians of Irish Traveller music.

Another documentary series to receive funding is No Name Media’s Hearing and Isolation.

The documentary explores the link between hearing loss, dementia and cognitive decline as we age, and will broadcast on DCTV. The 1x52” project, which was developed in partnership with CHIME - the national charity for deafness and hearing loss, has received a funding allocation of €37,035.

Vico Films are developing a drama series for Virgin Media One. With a current working title of Bag For Life, 4x60” series received €450,000 under the Sound and Vision scheme.

Vision Independent Productions have received €285,846 towards a new 4x50” arts/cultural documentary series, entitled Book Club for broadcast on RTÉ One, while Tyrone Productions new 4x46” science/environmental documentary series, NICU: Where Life Begins has received 355,328.

“We were once again impressed with the quality of projects submitted for consideration,” said BAI Chief Executive, Celene Craig when speaking about the funding round. “The final selection represents a good spread of programming across a diversity of formats, genres and audiences and helps to fulfil the BAI’s strategic aims with regard to promoting diversity and plurality, the Irish language and enhancing innovation and sectoral sustainability.”

“I was particularly heartened by the progress made in relation to women in leadership roles: all TV projects recommended for funding have some female representation in lead creative roles, with just over 80% of funding for TV applications recommended going to projects that have indicated half or more key roles are filled by women,” added Craig.
