The Deceived makes its Irish debut on Virgin Media Television
08 Sep 2020 : Nathan Griffin
The Deceived
The new psychological thriller, which is written by Lisa McGee (Derry Girls, Being Human, The White Queen) and Tobias Beer, was filmed on location in Northern Ireland.

Produced by New Pictures, the four-part series is directed by Chloe Thomas (HarlotsVictoria), produced by Imogen O’Sullivan,  and executive produced by Charlie Hampton (The Spanish Princess), Charlie Pattinson (Catherine the GreatThe Missing), Lisa McGee, and Tobias Beer is supported by funding from Northern Ireland Screen.

A compelling, sinister narrative of lust, manipulation and betrayal, the central character in The Deceived is English student Ophelia (Emily Reid – Curfew), who falls in love with her married lecturer, seeing in him all the answers to her needs. When their affair results in a shocking and tragic death, Ophelia finds herself trapped in a world where she can no longer trust her own mind.

Emmett J. Scanlan (KryptonPeaky BlindersThe Fall) plays the timelessly attractive and charismatic English lecturer Dr Michael Callaghan; Catherine Walker (ShetlandVersailles) plays his wife Roisin, a successful, award-winning fiction writer;  Eleanor Methven (Little Women) plays Roisin’s devoted and sometimes overbearing mother Mary Mulvery; Ian McElhinney (Game of Thrones, Derry Girls) is Michael’s father Hugh fighting the oncoming tide of dementia; Shelley Conn (Liar) plays Roisin’s best friend Ruth, intelligent and loyal, and Dempsey Bovell (Patrick Melrose) is Michael’s confidante and biggest admirer, Matthew. Paul Mescal (Normal People) plays Ophelia’s friend Sean McKeough.

Derry Girls creator Lisa McGee is the mastermind behind The Deceived, which also stars the talents of Emmett J. Scanlan and Normal People star Paul Mescal.

"Let's face it, Normal People is a masterpiece. Beautifully, directed, beautifully acted, beautifully shot," said Scanlan. "They allow characters to breathe, scenes to develop and we see such beautiful storytelling.”

"I worked with Paul on The Deceived before this came out and one day I think he went down to Dublin to watch some of the episodes before they aired and he was really happy with what they had made and showed me the trailer. He is a lovely lad, a proper gent and there are so many great actors on The Deceived," he added.

"The story in The Deceived is visceral, it's dark, there are so many layers to it and my character is intelligent, charming, and a very good lecturer who has people eating out of the palm of his hand. He is narcissistic, he is strong, scary, brave, weak... he is all of it. He has many different cases that great writing can uncover.

"When I read the script, each of the four episodes end on lovely little cliff-hangers and it leaves you craving for more, wanting to know what happens next.

"The viewing figures were massive when this show was aired in England a few weeks back and suggests it has hit the mark and I really hope the Irish audience enjoy it when it goes out on Virgin Media."

The Channel 5 and Virgin Media Television original drama pulled in significant viewing figures when it debuted in the UK earlier this year. The show marked the biggest drama launch for the channel since 2017 and earned over 2 million viewers from the first episode alone, which features a strong contingent of Irish actors.

Emmett Scanlan believes we are living through a golden age for Irish actors, as he prepares to take centre stage in Virgin Media's The Deceived.

"There are so many great Irish actors out there getting great roles at the moment and it is great to see," said Scanlan.

"The more people who are doing well, the better it is. More and more great shows are featuring Irish actors and I just saw the trailer for Brendan Gleeson in his role as President Donald Trump. I'm hearing great things about Colin Farrell in the new Batman movie, so it's great to see Irish men and women kicking ass and doing such amazing work."

The Deceived continues on Virgin Media One at 9pm on Monday, September 14th.
