Róisín Kearney's Paddy to premiere at Galway Film Fleadh
09 Jul 2020 : News Desk
Cast of Paddy.
Paddy, directed by Róisín Kearney and written by Sinéad Collopy, will have its world premiere at this year’s Galway Film Fleadh.

You can only watch this film as part of Irish Talent: New Shorts Six: Fiction, which takes place on Saturday, July 11th at 5 pm.

Produced by Maeve McGrath of Sidhe Company and Keith Bogue of Bogue Art Films, Paddy follows a young Londoner growing up in the 1970s, who questions his identity. Living with his widowed mother and younger sister he’s trying to honour his late Father's memory by learning Irish music, but he discovers another form of music; one that speaks for him; one that’s being created by people like him - first-generation Irish. A generation that’s English but seen as Irish; a lesson that Patrick learns in a brutal fashion, but emerges from with a clear idea of who he is.

Speaking about the world premiere of PADDY at the Galway Film Fleadh on July 11th, Producer Maeve McGrath noted:

“We had our eyes on the Fleadh from the start. Our aim was to shoot the film before Christmas and go into post-production in the New Year so that PADDY would be ready to submit to the Galway Film Fleadh by May 2020. To premiere this short film in Galway is a testament to the hard work of the cast and crew and everyone involved in making PADDY happen. We are grateful for the support from Creative Ireland Clare and Clare County Council, as it ensured that we could produce Sinéad Collopy’s script in Clare where Sinéad is based.”

“Finding the right cast in the west was important for the film and Cian Hughes from Ennis, who plays Patrick in the film, is outstanding in the role,” McGrath added. “Cian was discovered after a call out for actors and director, Róisín Kearney put him through his paces during the casting. Galway girl, Kiri Flaherty plays his young sister Bernadette and proves that acting talent in the west is alive and kicking.”

Director Róisín Kearney added:

“When I first read Paddy I was struck by the parallels to today. Although set in the 70s; the fundamentals have not changed. The need to become part of a micro-society when in a foreign land, the coming of age of a young man, the conflict of loyalties, and of course music, and its importance to a generation's identity; in this case punk.”

The project is written by Sinéad Collopy, whose most recent project, Salvation Calling (2020) has been commissioned by the 2020 BBC Interconnected Scheme. She is also one of three writers to be chosen as part of the WRAP/Galway Film Centre Mentoring Scheme for her TV script, Straight & Narrow, and her feature film, Resurrection ’77, was selected by the Screen Ireland Spotlight Scheme in 2020 for development funding.

McGrath’s recent work includes Artistic Director at the Kerry Film Festival; Producer at the Carlow Arts Festival; and Producer for Arts Council Change Makers, while Bogue has over 20 years’ experience in the Film and TV industry and has won several awards both as scriptwriter and producer.
