The four-part documentary series follows Domini as she goes inside one of Ireland’s biggest prisons to run her unique rehabilitation programme.
Over the course of 3 months, the entrepreneurship programme aims to nourish and transform a group of criminals by teaching them how to turn a business idea into a more positive, crime-free career.
At present, there are currently over 4,000 people in prison custody in Ireland, each one costing the taxpayer €70,000 and above per year. With recidivism rates currently at 45%, the economic costs of crime on society as a whole have never been more expensive. Domini believes that there may be a radical new approach to tackle these out of control numbers by encouraging prisoners to take part in her unique programme.
In episode one, six inmates sign up to take the course but very few begin with any real concrete business ideas. With one inmate dropping out and another set for release, Domini contemplates whether the course will work at all for her four remaining students by transforming them into more productive members of society or if they will just resort to their predisposition of a life of crime.
Prison Breaks: Episode 1 airs this Wednesday, February 12th at 10 pm on Virgin Media One.
