Screen Ireland Announces Q2 2019 Funding Decisions

Screen Ireland has announced the successful applicants for funding for the second quarter of 2019.

A diverse mix of well-established and up-and-coming talent feature among the latest crop of funding decisions across fiction, animation, and documentary. Projects are given funding at development, production and distribution stages.

Development Funding

Hail Mary Pictures has secured development funding for two projects, which includes JETS 2019 winner Paradigm (€17,100), produced by Richard Bolger and directed by Gavin Kilduff, and Pierce Ryan’s AV(€19,560).

Cornelia Street Productions’ Peter Murphy and Rachel Moriarty have received €20,300 for What We Know About Men. Paul Kennedy’s The Sticksreceives €17,700 with New Decade TV Ltd producing, whilst Lovely Pictures’ Death Spacehas received €17,100 with Conor Finnegan writing and directing.

Writer/Director John Butler, who recently enjoyed the successful release of his third feature film Papi Chulolast month, has secured development funding of €28,600 for Law of the Land with Treasure Entertainment, marking the second consecutive quarter with development funding after securing funding in Q1 2019 for Bi Bi Baby (€37,000).

Feline Films’ new project Wolf, which is in talks with Barry Keoghan to feature as the young man who is convinced he is a wolf, has been awarded €33,600 with Nathalie Biancheri writing and directing. €26,500 went to Taking the Picturefor Tile Films, with Michael Creagh, Matthew Hurd and Stephen Hogan penning the script. Juanita Wilson and Andrew Meehan’s Young Girlreceives the only offer for Screenplay development funding for €18,000 with Wilson herself directing.

Four Documentaries are also included in the development line-up with each project receiving €15,000. This includes Dot Television’s Kozahfrom writer/director partnership David Burke and Sean O’Cualain, Eamon Little’s The Bow with Wildfire Films producing.

Garry Keane and Andrew McConnell follow up their upcoming documentary Gaza, which is out in cinemas on August 9th, with The Kazakh Steppe, which is produced by Cyprus Avenue Films Limited, while Loic Jourdain and Mirjam Strugalla The Da Vinci in the Kitchen with Soilsiu Films producing.

Other significant development awards go to International Television Development where nine projects have received development funding. 

  • The Third Testament- Jamie Hannigan - Wild Atlantic - €30,000
  • Sarah Says- Ciaran Donnelly - T4 Productions - €15,000
  • Becoming Casement- Thaddeus O'Sullivan / Mark O'Halloran - Saffron Pictures - €29,450
  • Meet Your Faker- Hugh Travers, Lisa Terle - World 2000 - €30,850
  • The Stranger- Eithne Verling - As I Am Productions - €16,600
  • Tainted- Declan Croghan - Footnote Productions Ltd - €25,000
  • Gage- Daniel O'Hara / Alex Barclay - Shin Awil Productions - €9,750
  • Asking For It- Hildegard Ryan / Eva O'Connor - Footnote Productions Ltd - €29,500
  • Richter- Anna McPartlin / Simone Nathan - Blinder Films - €15,000

This marks the fourth time ShinAwil has received development funding for International Television Drama with previous projects Kill (€21,750), Costigan (€35,250), and Flying Bird (€30,000) all receiving support from Screen Ireland.

Production Funding

Parallel Films have secured production funding for four separate projects totalling €1.35M. The Ronan Bennet scripted Borderlandsecured €800,000, whilst Cardboard Gangsters writer/director Mark O’Connor’s Television series Darklands,has received additional production funding of €300,000. Additionally, both Sweetness in the Belly and My Salinger Year received €50,000 and €200,000 respectively.   

After his successful feature-debut The Cured, David Freyne’s 90s set comedy-drama Beardshas been awarded €750,000 with Atomic 80 producing. Nathalie Biancheri’s Wolf, produced by Feline Films,has secured €800,000 in production funding on top of the €33,600 project development funding award specified above. 

John Butler and Treasure Entertainment have received additional production funding for The Godparents (€160,000). Meanwhile, Element Pictures’ TV drama adaptation of Sally Rooney’s novel, Normal People directed by Oscar nominee Lenny Abrahamson, has received additional production funding of €600,000. 

Cartoon Saloon’s Puffin Rock Feature Filmhas also received production funding of €300,000. The feature adaptation of the highly popular pre-school animation television series is a co-production with Derry-based Dog Ears and Penguin Books. 

Other significant production awards include Workshed Films’ Let the Wrong One In­ written and directed by Conor McMahon (€650,000) and O’Sullivan Productions’ Cutters from writer/director Rachel Carey (€600,000). Neasa Hardiman’s Sea Fever (€50,000) and Cathy Brady’s Wildfire(€75,000) have also received funding.

Distribution Funding

Hugh O’Conor’s hit coming-of-age drama-comedy ‘Metal Heart’ received €30,000 in distribution support, which was handled by Breakout Pictures, with Blinder Films’ Vita and Virginia, handled by Wildcard Distribution, also receiving distribution funding (€12,500). Additionally, Papi Chulo (€34,000), Prisioners of the Moon (€10,000)and Carmel Winters’Float Like a Butterfly (€45,000) received distribution support, each respectively being handled by Eclipse Pictures. 

Two projects received direct distribution funding from Screen Ireland - Tom Burke’s climate-change inspired documentary Losing Alaska, distributed by Marcie Films and Keith Walsh’s When All is Ruin Once Again, distributed by Twopair Films - both receiving €10,000.
