Irish film ‘Brooklyn’ has maintained its impressive Irish box office run after it topped the charts on its second weekend of release, overtaking James Bond film ‘Spectre’.
The film added €410,661 to its haul over the weekend of November 13th to 15th, sitting on a total of €1,361,852 at the Irish box office after only 10 days on release, taking an average of €5,784 across 71 locations.
‘Brooklyn’ has been warmly received by critics and audiences alike, earning a rare 99% rating on RottenTomatoes.com based on 103 reviews from Irish and international critics. The film is widely believed to a serious contender in the Oscar race in the categories of Best Picture, Best Director (John Crowley), Best Actress (Saoirse Ronan) and Best Adapted Screenplay (Nick Hornby).
Meanwhile the Palm Springs International Film Festival revealed that the film's star Saoirse Ronan would be honoured with its International Star award. Festival chairman Harold Matzner commented that audiences have witnessed Ronan "grow from a young girl to the accomplished actress she is today" and that in ‘Brooklyn’, "Ronan embodies the grace and depth of a classic Hollywood screen star." Previous recipients of the award include Helen Mirren and Javier Bardem. Earlier this month, Saoirse was also awarded with a New Hollywood Award at the Hollywood Film Awards for her work in ‘Brooklyn’.
‘Brooklyn’ was directed by John Crowley and was adapted by Nick Hornby from the novel by Colm Tóibín, and stars Saoirse Ronan, Domhnall Gleeson, Emory Cohen, Jim Broadbent and Julie Walters. It was produced by Finola Dwyer and Amanda Posey, with Alan Moloney as executive producer. Production companies were Parallel Films, Finola Dwyer Productions, Wildgaze Films and Item 7, with financing coming from the Irish Film Board, the BAI, RTÉ, BBC, Telefilm, SODEC and the BFI. It is distributed by Lionsgate in Ireland and the UK and Fox Searchlight in the United States.
