Northern Ireland Screen Launches Schemes for Emerging Talent
19 Mar 2014 : Deirdre Molumby
Northern Ireland Screen, the government-backed leading agency for the film, television and digital content industries in Northern Ireland, has launched two initiatives which are aimed at Northern Ireland filmmakers. The agency provides information, funding and resources for filming in the North, and its latest schemes maintain their goals of supporting emerging talent in Northern Ireland.

The first scheme, ‘Emerging Auteurs’, aims to co-operate with strong up-and-coming writers and directors from Northern Ireland. It develops their unique visions into feature projects.

The writer or director is invited to submit up to three ideas for a feature film, with the objective of eventually choosing one to develop with the help of Northern Ireland Screen’s Script consultant and Short Film Executive. Films need not be limited by genre as they can be based in either fact or fiction, animated or live action.

The development process will take place between April 2014 and March 2015, during which time participants are required to deliver at least two drafts plus a number of revisions of their feature script. While the developed script remains the property of the writer/director and participants are paid for their participation, they must meet a number of terms and conditions, which can be read here, along with application details and other information.

The second scheme is entitled ‘Shorts to Features’. It is geared towards creative teams, giving them the opportunity to produce a short film which in tone with and thematically related to a feature film they hope to make.

For this initiative, applicant submit a feature film script, which can be a first draft or at a later stage. Those applying also submit two short film ideas which will be developed through a series of workshops hosted with Northern Ireland Screen’s Script Consultant and Short Film Initiative.

The development work takes place between April 2014 and February 2015. At the end of the development period, Northern Ireland Screen will select up to three projects to go into production with a budget of up to £20,000. See terms and conditions, application deadlines and other information, see here.

The deadline for applications for both schemes is Friday 11th April 2014 at 5pm.

‘Emerging Auteurs’ and ‘Shorts to Features’ are joint initiatives between Northern Ireland Screen and the BFI Network.
