The deadline for RTÉ’s formats on entertainment programming is this Friday (April 20). The broadcaster is seeking submissions from producers for new formats to play as a series of four or more on-off broadcast pilots for both 25-minute and 52-minute slots.
RTÉ will part finance the series for up to €25,000 per pilot, depending on the duration and nature of the production.
Ideas will be assessed by a cross-genre Formats Commissioning Group with representatives from Lifestyle, RTÉ Two and Entertainment and will be overseen by Eddie Doyle, commissioning editor of RTÉ TWO and Tonyia Dowling, assistant commissioning editor for RTÉ Two.
Producers submitting proposals will need a letter of interest from an international distribution company as well as the balance of finance. Projects which do not have a distribution partner at the application stage will be taken into consideration, but should be aware those with distribution partners will be given priority.
The pilots will initially be broadcast on RTÉ Two this autumn in a peak-time slot. RTÉ is looking for ideas that have potential to be aired in a variety of time-slots on RTÉ One and RTÉ Two, should they go to full series. Previous shows which aired in a variety of peak-time slots across both chanels include ‘Masterchef’, ‘Don’t Tell the Bride’ and ‘Secret Millionaire’.
The ideas may vary in genre as well as target audience. RTÉ is interested in both mainstream entertainment shows and edgier, challenging programmes Applicants are urged to be aware of their target audience; the 35-54 age group for instance view shows such as ‘The Rose of Tralee’ and ‘The Late Late Show’, while younger audiences tend to watch ‘Killinaskully’ and ‘Celebrity Bainisteoir’.
