Critically-acclaimed Irish drama Blood has won a prestigious Writers’ Guild of Great Britain Award, beating off tough competition from BBC and Sky.

Writer Sophie Petzal won the long-form drama category for the first series of Blood, to win at the annual awards, beating BBC1’s Gentleman Jack and Sky Atlantic drama Tin Star.

 “I’m completely overwhelmed to have received this award from my peers, especially up against such prestigious competition,” said writer Sophie Petzal when talking with IFTN.

“Blood is the result of a unique collaboration of incredible talents and I have each and every one of our cast and crew to thank for what we have achieved,” she continued. “Season two will begin to air in the coming months and I am hugely excited for people to see where we have taken our story and its characters, old and new.”

Commissioned by Virgin Media Television, Blood has become one of Ireland’s most successful drama exports, selling in over 65 territories around the world and receiving critical acclaim from The Guardian and Time Magazine.

Bill Malone, Virgin Media Television Director of Content said;

“This award is a real boost for the Irish production sector and is recognition of the high quality drama that this country can produce. Blood was a key part of Virgin Media Television’s strategy to invest in drama and factual series of international calibre and there is more to come as we put the finishing touches to series 2 of Blood, which will broadcast next month.”

Starring Adrian Dunbar, viewers will have a second chance to see Series 1 of Blood starting on Friday night, January 15th on Virgin Media One at 10pm.

Viewers can also watch the full series of Blood on Virgin Media Player and Virgin Media On Demand.
