European Film Forum at Cannes 2017 to focus on future of MEDIA Programme
10 May 2017 : Katie McNeice
The future of the MEDIA programme after 2020 is set to be the focus of the forum this month, with speakers, panels, roundtables and showcases designed to discuss its properties and potential to add value both in terms of the european and global industries.

This includes a of a development success-story by Ed Guiney and the Element team, in relation to ‘The Killing of a Sacred Deer’ (Yorgos Lanthimos) on Monday May 22nd.

A breakdown of each of these is provided. For further information visit Creative Europe Ireland via the link below.

Creating the Future: The Media Programme After 2020

Monday, 22 May from 14:30 to 17:30
Panel 1:The priorities of MEDIA and how the future MEDIA programme could best add value in a changing European and global audiovisual landscape.

Core issues include: How are the ecosystems of financing evolving and how can MEDIA not only complement but also encourage private initiatives and leverage private investments? How are the national support schemes being revised in respect to:

  1. Policy objectives such as competitiveness and cultural diversity
  2. The different schemes and instruments (e.g. grants or loans)
  3. How should these various instruments be ideally combined in order to effectively support the sector across the value chain?

Panel 2: How to increase the visibility and to attract audience for European creations?

The discussion will look at how MEDIA could address this challenge either through its specific programme or by seeking synergies with national film policies. How to improve cross-border distribution and promotion of European films?

While it is difficult to predict the individual success of each individual film, could the objective of better circulation be more strongly integrated in national film policies? If so, how would it be put into practice? Should promotional activities be more vigorously supported by MEDIA? Should this support benefit to fewer or more audiovisual works? What platforms of distribution should be involved in such promotional activities? What potential implications would it have on the models of distribution?
