‘Nymphet’ an Irish, Dutch, Belgian short film co-pro produced by Declan Lynch
‘Nymphet’, a short film co-production between Ireland, Belgium and the Netherlands took the top award of ‘Best Film’ at the Amsterdam Shortcutz awards 2017.

The prize presented by Dutch actor Rutger Hauer (‘Bladerunner’, ‘The Hitcher’) to the film's producer Declan Lynch (‘Big Bird’) and director Laura Hermanides was one of three prizes awarded to the film on the night.

Dublin producer Declan Lynch, Unity Productions had this to say about the win: "We are proud of the film and delighted with the audience reaction to it. We hope that more festivals screen it. The aim of the Follow project is to produce an anthology feature film about the city of Ghent'

"Our cast was led by a 12-year actor called Alix Jana Cale who is compelling in the central role. We are lucky to have had such great cooperation between team members on this film." Declan Lynch, Producer, Unity Productions.

The film shot by Belgian cinematographer Anton Mertens tells the story of a young girls first exploration of sexuality.

14-year-old Alix Jana Cale won best actress and Laura Hermanides was presented with best director by producer Jan Harlan (‘Full Metal Jacket’, ‘The Shining’).

Screenwriter Shauni De Gussem submitted her script to a script-to-screen project called 'FollowGent' in Belgium. "I was happy with the script so was hopeful someone would like it" she explains. "It was a small production, so I found that I could give additional help on set, which made it a more intimate experience for me."

"It’s been a really exciting experience watching Nymphet slowly gather momentum over the last year," says Gussem. The film started out its festival life in Ireland [Galway Film Fleadh] and since then has screened and won critical praise at several festivals worldwide.

"I am really proud of how the film has been made, the production team were super professional and really focused on the subtlety in the script.

"For me, Nymphet is a story about a 12-year-old girl playing a new game of which she doesn't fully understand the consequences," says De Gussem.

Laura Hermanides, the director of the short film Nymphet read the script and instantly felt a connection. "It's a real story and it's charming. That really struck me.”

The ‘Best Film’ production team behind ‘Nymphet’ receive €10,000 worth of film equipment sponsorship with Cam-a-lot, Amsterdam.
