Brie Larson, lead actress of Irish co-production ‘Room’ (produced by Element Pictures and supported by the Irish Film Board), has picked up the Best Actress Drama Award at the 2016 Golden Globe Awards, which took place last night at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California.

Larson has garnered unanimous praise for her performance as Ma in Lenny Abrahamson’s ‘Room’, which premiered at Telluride in September 2015.

Commenting on the win, the Irish Film Board Chief Executive James Hickey said:

“Congratulations to Brie Larson on winning this prestigious award. Her much deserved win is a credit to the entire team behind the Irish Film Board funded film ‘Room’ which will be released in Ireland this week. I have no doubt that this award will help to build momentum at the Irish and International box office. I urge Irish audiences to go and see this film. It really is a stunning piece of work and cinema-goers will not be disappointed.”

Commenting on last night’s win, Element Pictures Producer Ed Guiney said: “This is an incredible win for Brie but also for all of us - for Lenny's truly amazing work as director and for Emma's brilliant script and for the work of our wonderful cast and crew. We could not be happier.”

‘Room’ was also nominated in the category of Best Motion Picture. Writer Emma Donoghue was nominated for Best Screenplay for ‘Room’ which she adapted from her own award-winning book.

Other Irish nominees at the awards included Saoirse Ronan for her performance in ‘Brooklyn’, Michael Fassbender for his performance in Danny Boyle's ‘Steve Jobs’ and Caitriona Balfe for Best Actress in a TV series for ‘Outlander’. Also of Irish interest at the awards was the nomination for Northern Irish shot ‘Game of Thrones’ for Best Drama Series and Eva Green was nominated for Best Actress Drama Series for ‘Penny Dreadful’, shot in Ardmore Studios in Bray.

‘Room’ is in cinemas on January 15th – check out the trailer below:
