‘Aonrú’ wins Best Documentary at Kerry

‘Aonrú’ has won Best Documentary at Kerry Film Festival 2015.

The short documentary directed by Dominic de Vere and produced by Jason Gaffney received the award at a packed closing ceremony Sunday 25 October at the Malton Hotel, Killarney, Co. Kerry.

‘Aonrú’ has been officially selected for every major Irish film festival in 2015 and will show at Cork Film Festival in November where it has been shortlisted to compete for the ‘Grand Prix’ Irish short presented by RTÉ.

Speaking at Sundays award ceremony producer Jason Gaffney said: “We are truly honoured to receive this award particularly in line with the competition which we believe was of an excellent standard. When we began the journey of making ‘Aonrú’ over three years ago – we wanted to ensure that the voices of Cape Clear islanders were heard by a larger audience – not just in Ireland but worldwide. We have been amazed by the positive reaction to the film and look forward to sharing their story with more people. All of the success would not have been possible without the support, honesty and integrity of the Cape Clear community. This is their award.”

Jason also discussed the next step for Lost Productions: “We have recently agreed a UK/Irish co-production feature with Poiesis Techné (London based) which will shoot on St Helena Island from November 2015 – June 2016. We are delighted to announce that the film will be directed by Dominic de Vere and Joseph Curran with sound being provided by Oliver Sanders. This is a massive project and we can’t wait to start shooting.”

‘Aonrú’ was co-funded by Cork County Council and Bord Iascaigh Mhara. Danny Crowley (‘Game of Thrones’) & Leon O’Neill (‘Life’s a Breeze’) provided sound while Annie Atkins (‘Grand Budapest Hotel’) headed graphic design.

Fail Safe Films short thriller 'Gridlock' almost finished post-production

Dublin based Fail Safe Films have almost completed the dramatic thriller ‘Gridlock’ at Coillte’s Donadea Forest Park, County Kildare.

The film which was commissioned by Kildare County Council is in post production with an expected release in November. ‘Gridlock’ is a short dramatic thriller set amidst the chaos of an intense traffic jam. When a little girl goes missing from one of the cars, her father forms a desperate search party to find her, and soon everyone is a suspect.

The film is directed by Ian Hunt Duffy with a cast including Moe Dunford, Peter Coonan, Amy De Bhrún, Joe Mullins, Ronan Leahy and Steve Wall.

Brenda Molloy, Coillte’s TV & Film Liaison Officer said: “The filming of Gridlock on Coillte land in Donadea forest park provides an opportunity to showcase Ireland’s potential as a leading location for film productions.”

Simon Doyle of Fail Safe Films, the producer of Gridlock, praised the professionalism of those involved in executing the production in Donadea forest: “Some of Ireland’s most stunning locations are here in Donadea forest park. Working closely with Coillte and Kildare County Council we were able to find a location that met the production team’s ambitions and truly came to life during the filming of Gridlock.”

‘Love is a Sting’ wins at Clones and Richard Harris International Film Festival

The Filmbase/RTÉ film ‘Love is a Sting’ has won two awards at the Clones Film Festival and the Richard Harris International Film Festival. Both festivals ran from the 22nd to the 25th October with ‘Love is a Sting’ winning the Best Short Film and Audience Awards respectively.

This marks the official start of the festival run for ‘Love is a Sting’. Having previewed at The Galway Film Fleadh in July, the film got the attention of renowned Irish actor Ciarán Hinds (‘There Will Be Blood’) who as of now joins the cast as The Narrator.

Directed by Vincent Gallagher (‘Burning Wishes’), written by Benjamin Cleary (‘Stutterer’) and produced by Ian Hunt Duffy and Fail Safe Films (‘Small Time’; ‘The Note’), ‘Love is a Sting’ tells the story of a struggling children's book writer named Harold Finch. At his lowest point, Harold gains an unexpected houseguest in the form of Anabel, an ageing hyper-intelligent mosquito. Anabel has literally been the fly on the wall throughout history, but has never managed to communicate with a human being. Until now.

Narrated by Ciarán Hinds (‘Game of Thrones’) and starring Seán T. Ó Meallaigh (‘An Klondike’), with an appearance from Barry Murphy (‘Après Match’), the film mixes live-action and animation. “We always knew that ‘Love is a Sting’ was going to be more ambitious than most short films”, says director Vincent Gallagher, “We had a total of 77 VFX shots, 12 more than ‘Jurassic Park’, so it was a real labour of love!”

For producer Ian Hunt Duffy, finding the right actor for the narration of the film was critical. “We really felt the story deserved a great actor to narrate it. So, we were delighted to get Ciarán Hinds on board. He just brings such gravitas and emotion to the piece.”

The film will next be screening at the Cork Film Festival, Waterford Film Festival, and Leeds International Film Festival in November. For more information visit the film’s Facebook page.
