The 6th Annual Takeover Film Festival to run from Friday, February 20th until Sunday, February 22nd, Oscar-winner Russell Crowe and Golden Globe winning actress Kim Cattrall confirmed for JDIFF and Irish short ‘Sophie at the Races’ to screen at the 45th Tampere International Short Film Festival in Finland.

6th Annual Takeover Film Festival to begin on February 22nd

The sixth annual Takeover Film Festival will run from Friday, February 20th until Sunday, February 22nd at the Queen’s Film Theatre in Belfast.

All events are organized by the QFT Youth Panel with the festival commencing with a premiere of the new film, ‘X+Y’, followed by a Q&A with Director Morgan Matthews, and Belfast-born star, Martin McCann.

‘X+Y’ is a comedy about a socially awkward teenage maths prodigy who finds his direction in life when he lands a spot on the British team at the International Mathematics Olympiad in Taipei.

Marion Campbell, Education and Outreach Officer at QFT said: ‘The Takeover Youth Panel have really excelled themselves with this year’s festival programme. This group of young people have created a programme not just full of great, enjoyable films, but films that really encourage you to think about issues very relevant to the time we are living in – race, diversity and equal rights. We are hugely excited that actor, Martin McCann, and director, Morgan Matthews, will be joining us on the opening night screening of ‘X+Y’. This is a unique opportunity to get a behind-the-scenes look at one of this year’s most interesting films.’

The festival continues on Saturday and Sunday with a packed film programme including:

  • Award-winning Japanese anime ‘Patema Inverted’
  • ‘Girlhood’ - a film about a 16 year old growing up in the Paris suburbs,
  • Oscar winning ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ - the classic adaptation of Harper Lee’s novel starring Gregory Peck
  • ‘School of Babel’ – a documentary set in Paris about a class of immigrant youth from countries around the globe

The closing film is ‘Difret’ - a socially relevant drama that seeks to illuminate a tradition in much of rural Ethiopia that grossly violates the rights of women and girls – the abduction of young women into marriage. Zeresenay’s Mehari’s enthralling debut drama, with Angelina Jolie as Executive Producer, explores Ethiopia’s journey towards equal rights.

Other highlights from the weekend include a highly original Animation Masterclass hosted by professional Animator, Jasbeer Singh, responsible for notable work shown on MTV and BBC. He will be appearing at the festival to share his animation techniques with those in attendance.

Northern Irish filmmakers will showcase and talk about their work in the Takeover Shorts programme and local musician John D’Arcy returns to the festival with his unique take on the past year at the movies, with an audio-visual remix of film, sound and live performance at the QFT bar.

Irish short ‘Sophie at the Races’ to screen at Tampere Short Film Festival

Irish short film ‘Sophie At The Races’ has been selected to screen in competition at the 45th Tampere International Short Film Festival, which runs March 4th to 8th.

Written and directed by Alan Friel - the film follows nine year old Sophie (Susie Power) as she and her wayward mother Harriett (Siobhan O’Kelly) travel through a modern Irish landscape to meet Sophie’s father (Michael Power). Sophie has never met her father before and when they end up at a bustling horse-fair she is excited by the prospect of her new ‘happy family’. Things fall apart when her mother starts to drink and Sophie realises that everything isn’t as it appears.

Speaking about the film, director Alan Friel said: ‘For me this is a very interesting time in the development of a child, the moment in time when there is a switch, when the expectation to be ‘looked after’ evaporates and is replaced with a realization that in lots of ways you are on your own. I hoped to show the love between a mother and child, the tragedy of the situation they are in but also the resilience of childhood; how the out-of-the-ordinary becomes ordinary when you live it every day.’

‘Sophie at the Races’ is produced by Fiona Kinsella at Jumper Productions, with support from the Irish Film Board. It was shot on 16mm by Robbie Ryan (DOP of upcoming ‘Catch Me Daddy’) over four days on location in Buttevant at the Cahirmee Horse Fair.

The Tampere Film Festival has taken place every March in the Finnish town since 1969, making it the oldest short film festival in Northern Europe. Each year the festival shows approximately 500 films to an audience of over 30,000 people.
