Programme for Subtitle European Film Festival, Kilkenny running November 24th-30th
24 Nov 2014 : Seán Brosnan
The 3rd Annual Subtitle European Film Festival, Ireland’s only film festival of subtitled European film, runs from Monday, November 24th until Sunday, November 30th in Kilkenny.

Providing a unique opportunity for fans of European film to see popular foreign language movies that wouldn’t normally be screened in Ireland, the festival, founded in 2012, kicks off at 7pm on November 24th with a screening of ‘Two Days, One Night’, a Belgian film written and directed by the Dardenne brothers starring Oscar winner Marion Cotillard as a woman who suffers a nervous breakdown whose job is in the hands of her co-workers following her return to work.

Closing the festival on Sunday, November 30th will be ‘The Tribe’, a Ukrainian film directed by Myroslav Slaboshpytskiy. The film, entirely in sign language, is set in a boarding school for deaf children, where new arrival Sergey is drawn into an institutional system of organised crime, involving robbery and prostitution.

The 2014 festival sees films from many other European nations including Denmark, Sweden, Iceland, Norway, Finland, Germany, France, Spain, Poland, Romania, Italy and Russia.

Funded by Creative Europe, this year the Cinemobile brings a distinctive project commissioned by Creative Europe and the MEDIA Audience Development programme, North by Northwest – Films on the Fringe. Free screenings brought through this initiative include Norway’s ‘Pioneer’ and Iceland’s ‘Of Horses And Men’. These will take place on Wednesday, November 26th.

The Angela Awards are back in The Set Theatre, Langtons on Sunday 30th November. Hosted by Pauline McLynn (‘Father Ted’, ‘Eastenders’), The Angela’s acknowledges the achievements of talent from across Europe and the presentations are made by well-known actors, writers and directors from the Irish film industry. Live music is provided by The Camembert Quartet. Limited tickets are available so early booking is advisable. Price: €25.
