Oscar-winning director Andrea Arnold Set For Foyle Film Festival Conference
29 Oct 2014 : Seán Brosnan
Oscar-winning director Andrea Arnold and BAFTA-winning producer Andrew Eaton will join a host of film industry luminaries at the Foyle Film Festival’s free two-day ‘From Shorts to Features’ conference next month, held in association with Honeycomb – Creative Works.

From November 21 to 22, filmmakers have the chance to learn about how to make the transition ‘From Shorts to Features’ through a programme of panels, workshops, case studies and special screenings.

The two-day event is supported by Honeycomb – Creative Works programme which is part financed by the European Union’s European Regional Development Fund through the INTERREG IVA Cross-border programmed managed by the Special EU Programmes Body, and Northern Ireland Screen.

The conference marks the 15th year of the Foyle Film Festival’s Light in Motion (LIM) Awards, which allow recipients to qualify for consideration in the Short Films category of the Academy Awards.

Past LIM winners to proceed to Oscar glory include Andrea Arnold, who will open the conference at the Nerve Centre in Derry-Londonderry on Friday, November 21, with an ‘In Conversation’ event with former Hollywood Reporter editor, Stuart Kemp.

Following a win at the 2005 Foyle Film Festival LIM Awards, Andrea went on to win an Oscar for her short film ‘Wasp’, before making critically acclaimed features ‘Red Road’, ‘Fish Tank’ and ‘Wuthering Heights’.

Derry-born producer Andrew Eaton, recipient of a number of awards including the 2004 BAFTA for Best Foreign Film for ‘In This World’, will join actor Nico Mirallegro, and producer/director Lisa Barros D’Sa for a panel discussion, sharing their experiences of the film development process.

Bernie McLaughlin, Foyle Film Festival director, said: ‘The Nerve Centre is delighted to welcome such fantastic filmmakers to our first Foyle Film Festival industry conference. The jump from making a short film to making a feature can be daunting for the first-timer. This conference is all about helping filmmakers bridge that gap and take things to the next level.’

The conference programme continues on Friday afternoon with a case study on biopic ‘Good Vibrations’, with producer Chris Martin and director Glenn Leyburn giving an insight into the making of last year’s film. Other conference highlights include:

  • Workshop with HBO-affiliated law firm SmithDehn LLP on legal do’s and don’ts.
  • Honeycomb – Creative Works networking reception and dinner, followed by a special screening of Gerry Anderson’s ‘love letter’ to Derry-Londonderry, ‘A City Dreaming’, in the city’s historic Guildhall.
  • Script writing and pitching sessions with ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ associate producer Ivana MacKinnon and London-based producer Tristan Goligher, in partnership with Creative Skillset.
  • Film distribution and promotion panel including Oscar-winning producer Mia Bays and Mark Vennis, co-founder of Moviehouse Entertainment.
  • Case study on ‘Six Shooter’ by Martin McDonagh, which qualified at the Foyle Film Festival in 2006 and went on to win the Academy Award for Best Live Action Short.
  • Film festival circuit panel, with festival contributors from the UK and Republic of Ireland, in partnership with Film Hub NI.
  • Screenings of films in competition in this year’s Foyle Film Festival.

McLaughlin added: ‘As well as an action-packed two days covering all aspects of film production and distribution, there will also be opportunities for filmmakers to make contacts and network with their peers. With special hotel rates available for conference goers, there really is no excuse not to take the next step in your filmmaking career.’

Registration for Foyle Film Festival CONF14 ‘From Shorts to Features’, in association with Honeycomb – Creative Works, is now open. Please visit www.foylefilmfestival.org for further information.
