Programme Released for 20th Junior Galway Film Fleadh
17 Oct 2014 : Seán Brosnan
The Junior Galway Film Fleadh (JGFF), celebrating 20 years of entertaining and educating young people through the power of film, have partnered with IFI Education to bring a programme of foreign language films, student short film showcases, workshops from professionals, competitions and discussions.

The 20th JGFF will take place in various locations around Galway City, commencing on the 12th November and closing on the 15th November with a sing-along from the Disney film ‘Frozen’.

Also available at the festival is the viewing of foreign language films and as well as providing a window of study into their respective languages, the 20th JGFF aims to foster discussion amongst their student audiences on the films’ themes, which include amongst others:

  • Women in the Workplace
  • European History
  • Coming of Age
  • Society and Cultural Politics

The 20th JGFF continues to place the Irish language as central to their ethos of Irish cinema and film education, with an Irish language programme that includes ‘Torthai na Daoirse’, a freshly relevant film about the Dunnes Stores apartheid strikers and winner of the Best Documentary award at the 26th Galway Film Fleadh.

Building on last year’s successful engagement of students with Human Rights issues, JGFF will host a Mental Health Awareness screening of ‘I Used to Live Here’ (winner of Best First Feature at the 26th Galway Film Fleadh) to be followed by a group discussion chaired by Jigsaw Galway and including input from director Frank Berry.

Like its big sister festival, the Junior Galway Film Fleadh is a festival of discovery and their Future Filmmakers Shorts Showcases will screen the very best in student and young people’s short films from all around Ireland with prizes awarded for the best young filmmakers.

The annual Story Pitching competition is still open for entries for any story ideas from under 18 year olds with everyone invited to attend the Story Pitching Finals and hear the pitches performed on Thursday 13th November at 12:30pm in the Town Hall Theatre.

The festival will also host a series of Workshops in Concept Art for the Film and Gaming Industry, Costume Design and Cosplay, Animation, SFX Make-Up and Video Effects. These workshops aim to provide students with introductory, interactive lessons in creative skills used in film production. The JGFF has partnered with a diverse range of professional tutors in these fields to facilitate these workshops and they are priced to be available to as many students as possible.

The 20th edition of the Junior Galway Film Fleadh will take place from 12th - 15th November 2014 in various locations across Galway City.

The full programme for the Junior Galway Film Fleadh is available at www.galwayfilmfleadh.com and programme brochures are available around Galway City, including Charlie Byrne’s Bookshop and Easons.
