Independent Film Festival IndieCork Kicks Off on October 12th
10 Oct 2014 : Seán Brosnan
IndieCork, a festival dedicated to independent cinema, will kick off on the 12th of October and run through to the 19th of October across many venues in Cork City.

The Festival, which is now in its 2nd year and also includes a music programme, will be screening 18 locally produced shorts, as well as a locally produced documentary, ‘Mother Jones and Her Children’ and the world premiere of Ian Ruby’s Cork feature ‘Dead Dogs’.

The diverse programme is packed with 50 best Irish shorts, showcasing the quality, talent and innovation in the indie film sector, Irish and international. As well as six new Irish features, there are new, independent features from the American indie scene, Germany, the UK, India and a wider international programme.

Programme Co-Director Una Feely said:This second edition is inspired by the creativity of film-makers, music-makers and emerging and independent talents who we are privileged to platform at IndieCork.

IndieCork will feature Screenings, workshops, talks, scriptwriting competitions, shorts, features and documentaries as well as a music and food programme. Renowned Filmmakers Tony Hill and Vivienne Dick will be giving talks about their work and there will also be a whole strand of workshops aimed at young filmmakers.

Co-Director Mick Hannigan said: It’s clear to us that there is an objective need for a festival dedicated to independent filmmaking in Ireland - just as there are indie festivals in the US and elsewhere to serve the indie scene. For the most part our programme is a platform for new and emerging talent. We celebrate the short film as an art form, screening 50 Irish short films that would otherwise not be seen by Cork audiences. We’re screening six Irish independent features, films made with passion and imagination. They deserve a platform - to be presented on a big screen, in a multiplex and before a welcoming audience. We have guests coming from Germany, France, Switzerland, England, Scotland and the US, so we're happy that the identity of IndieCork is being established internationally as well.

IndieCork is Ireland’s only festival that works as a cooperative and is owned by the members. IndieCork believes that in the current economic climate, the only sustainable and independent way of doing things is to do it yourself; this helps the festival to support and respond to local filmmakers, musicians and artists many of whom are shareholders in the company.

IndieCork runs from October 12th until October 19th in different venues around Cork City. IndieCork is supported by sponsorship from Rising Sons Brewery, who believe that IndieCork best represents an independent spirit and marries perfectly with their own ethos.
