‘Anywhere But Here’ Selected for Brest Festival
‘Anywhere But Here’, an Irish short film funded by Rankin’s 2014 Collabor8te scheme and produced by Sweet Media, has been selected to screen at the 29th Brest European Short Film Festival, which takes place in Brest, France, from the 11th to the 16th of November.

Written by Ursula Rani Sarma, directed by John Hayes and produced by Andy Bradford of Sweet Media, the short tells the story of James, a mixed race boy living in a crumbling coastal farmhouse with his grief stricken father. He spends the last days of his summer holidays on a windswept beach with his only friend, a Japanese Spider crab called Bernard. But then electric city kid Stacey shows and turns his world around.

Shot on location in Dublin in January 2014 by director of photography James Mather, ‘Anywhere But Here’ features rising young Irish talent Doru Micu and Lisa Reilly alongside more seasoned actors Steve Wall and Conor Delaney. ‘Anywhere But Here’ premiered at the Galway Film Fleadh on July 10th and was also screened at the Edinburgh Film Festival earlier in the year.

‘The Last Days of Peter Bergmann’ Wins at the Melbourne International Film Festival
‘The Last Days of Peter Bergmann’ has won the Best Documentary Short Film Award at this year’s Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF). This is the second time the film has attained Oscar eligibility through winning an accredited International Film Festival. It previously won the Audience Award at Stranger than Fiction, Grand Jury Prize at Nashville Film Festival and the IFTA for Best Short Film.

The film, which was funded as part of the Irish Film Boards Reality Bites Scheme, has so far screened at over 25 festivals worldwide after its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, and won this year’s IFTA for Best Short Film. The film follows a man who arrived in Sligo in the summer of 2009. Over his final three days, he would go to great lengths to ensure no one would ever discover who he was or where he came from.

Ciaran Cassidy, director of ‘The Last Days of Peter Bergmann,’ said “We are honoured with the win in Melbourne and thrilled that it is connecting with an audience so far away from home. It’s a testament to the work of the team and everyone involved in making the film.”

Cassidy, is currently in pre-production on feature documentary ‘JIHAD JANE: Dangerously Seeking Marriage’, a film about three ‘fundamentalist terrorists’ seeking love and marriage in a one bedroom apartment in a small town in Ireland. The film will be produced by Fastnet Films along with Silverosa Film in Sweden and Helsinki Film in Finland.
