Dublin Premiere of ‘African Pride’ at GAZE
28 Jul 2014 : Deirdre Molumby
The winner of the Best Human Rights Documentary at the 26th Galway Film Fleadh this month, ‘African Pride’, is to have its Dublin Premiere. RTÉ journalist Laura Fletcher’s independent directorial debut examines homophobia in South Africa’s townships.

The premiere will feature as part of a ‘Best of Irish’ double bill at GAZE LGBT International Film Festival on 2 August 2014. The film will be screened alongside an exclusive first look at material from ‘The Queen of Ireland’, Conor Horgan’s much anticipated documentary about Rory O’ Neill aka Panti Pandora Bliss.

Both directors will be in attendance and there will be a panel discussion involving BelongTo on homophobic violence, activism and how the stories captured in ‘African Pride’ are a reflection of similar experiences around world and are shared by survivors in Ireland.

‘African Pride’ looks at the way in which South Africans are meeting crimes targeting lesbian women, gay men and transgender people with visibility by means of township prides and protests. Homophobia continues to find violent expression in assaults, rapes and murders. In response mourners, comrades, friends and survivors are taking to the streets in growing numbers for memorials, protests and township pride marches.

“‘African Pride’ is a South African story which deals with issues that resonate across the globe. It’s the story of discrimination, resilience, love and loss,” says Fletcher. “That the stories of strength, vulnerability and determination captured in this film are echoed elsewhere around the world is also reflected in the festival’s fantastic programme.”

This theme of GAZE this year is "The Power Of Our Stories," and as ‘African Pride’ is a film built entirely on stories shared by those who invited the director to capture their lives and activism, Fletcher could scarcely have found a more appropriatly themed festival to showcase this documentary.

“There are Irish Premieres of the Michael Lucas documentary Campaign of Hate exploring anti-gay legislation in Russia,” continues Flethcher, “and the violence that has accompanied it, and Sridhar Rangayan’s Purple Skies looking at the challenges faced by lesbians, bisexuals and transgender people in India. ‘African Pride’ is in brilliant thought-provoking company at GAZE.”

‘African Pride’ was filmed, directed and produced by Fletcher. The independent film was largely self-funded, and a crowd-funding initiative aided its completion. The score was written by Stephen Rennicks (‘Frank’, ‘The Stag’), while editing and post production was done by Galway’s Riverside Television, whose credits include Risteard O Domhnaill’s award winning documentary ‘The Pipe’.

GAZE International LGBT Film Festival takes place from 31 July until 4 August 2014 in the Light House Cinema in Dublin.
