World Premiere of ‘Miss Julie’ at Toronto International Film Festival
25 Jul 2014 : Deirdre Molumby
‘Miss Julie’ makes its World Premiere at this year's Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) which runs from 4th to 14th September. Toronto is on a par with other premiere world film festivals such as Cannes, Venice and Berlin. The festival has a highly competitive selection process and is considered a great launch pad for the North American market.

Filmed entirely on location at Castle Coole, Co. Fermanagh ‘Miss Julie’ is the latest film adaptation based on the play of the same name by Swedish playwright August Strindberg. The film received funding from the Northern Ireland Screen Fund supported by Invest NI and part funded by the European Regional Development Fund.

‘Miss Julie’ stars Jessica Chastain (‘Zero Dark Thirty’; ‘Lawless’; ‘The Help’), Dubliner Colin Farrell (‘Seven Psychopaths’; ‘Saving Mr Banks’; ‘In Bruges’), and Samantha Morton (‘Cosmopolis’; ‘John Carter’; ‘Elizabeth: The Golden Age’) and is directed by Liv Ullman.

Originally set in Sweden and written in 1888, the film will transfer to Fermanagh in 1890, where, during the course of a midsummer night, Julie (Jessica Chastain), the troubled daughter of an Anglo-Irish aristocrat, encourages her father's valet, John (Colin Farrell) to seduce her, while he is already engaged to the cook (Samantha Morton). The story examines themes of sex, greed, power and manipulation and a battle for control swings back and forth between Miss Julie and John, culminating in a shocking and dark end.

’Miss Julie’ is produced by Teun Hilte and Oliver Dungey of The Apocalypse Films Company, Synnøve Hørsdal of Maipo Film, and co-produced by Rita Dagher of Senorita Films and Tristan Orpen Lynch and Aoife O’Sullivan for Irish production company Subotica. Some of the key Irish crew members included costume designer Consolata Boyle (‘The Queen’, ‘Philomena’), as well as sound department members Ronan Hill (‘GOT’), Steve Fanagan (‘Albert Nobbs’, ‘Citadel’), Michelle Cuniffe (‘The Guard’, ‘Inside I’m Dancing’) and dialogue editor Peter Blayney ('The Last Days on Mars', 'Ripper Street').
