IADT Students display talent at Galway Film Fleadh
11 Jul 2014 : Deirdre Molumby
IADT students and graduates feature strongly in this year’s Galway Film Fleadh, a six day international film event held every July. The Fleadh brings together audiences and filmmakers from around the world. A wide variety of talent is on show from the National Film School (NFS) at the Institute of Art Design and Technology (IADT), Dun Laoghaire with the students of IADT displaying their work throughout the course of the festival.

’Skunky Dog’ directed by James Fitzgerald, ‘Luke’ directed by Conor Hamil, ‘Hollowlands’ directed by Greg Colley and “Bo” directed by Oisin Bickley are a selection of the films by IADT students to be showcase at the Fleadh.

The other student animation films that have been selected are ‘Marrying the Sea’ (Sarah Walsh), ‘Lena and Gray’ (Melissa Malone), ‘Vertical Horizons’ (Anita Gaughan), ‘A Girl’s Best Friend’ (Clare Carroll), ‘In Sheep’s Clothing’ (Aisling O'Reilly), ‘Your Move’ (Simon Riley), and ‘Useless’ (Eva Kavanagh).

Feature films directed by graduates include Terry McMahon’s ‘Patrick’s Day’ and Patrick Ryan’s ‘Darkness on the Edge of Town’. IADT Animation Lecturers also feature throughout the Galway Film Fleadh. David Quin is competing with his new animation, ‘A Warning to All Kings’, and Steve Woods, has dance film, ‘Keeping Time’, in competition.

Attending the Fleadh, President of the IADT Dun Laoghaire, Dr Annie Doona said, “Each year we have the privilege of watching the work of our talented students showcased at this international event. It is a very enjoyable experience to visit the Galway Film Fleadh but it becomes a more rewarding one when I see the work of our students enjoyed by audiences from all over the world.”

The Fleadh’s programme also features events like workshops, seminars, public interviews and masterclasses. As in previous years, the National Film School at IADT is sponsoring the Screenwriting Masterclass, this year with Josh Olson (A History of Violence).

“The creative, media and cultural industries play a crucial role in Ireland’s future economic growth. Preparing students for careers in these industries is an important part of the work carried out at higher education institutions like IADT. It is wonderful to see such a strong Irish representation at an international event,” Dr Doona concluded.

The festival ends on Sunday 13th July.
