Irish Pride in Cannes as Blinder Director Richie Smyth Scoops Bronze Lion Award
26 Jun 2012 : By Eva Hall
Director Richie Smyth
Irish director Richie Smyth of Dublin-based production company Blinder is celebrating after winning a Cannes Lion Award for his ISPCC advertisement entitled ‘I Can’t Wait’.

Blinder picked up a Bronze Lion over the weekend for the 40-second film, which was directed by Smyth and produced by Blinder. The film is a promotional video for the ISPCC children’s organisation and was edited by John O’Connor at Windmill Lane.

Since its release in 2011, the film has garnered much coverage around the world via online mediums. It has already won a number of accolades, including awards at the Epicas, Clios, D&Ads and GBDA. The latest award is a significant one, as Cannes Lions only celebrate the most creative talent on the international film and television landscape.

Blinder’s managing director Michael Duffy said: “To win a Cannes Lion is an exceptional achievement. We are delighted for Richie Smyth and very pleased to have done such a strong piece of work for ISPCC.”

Blinder’s win comes just days after Irish director Stevie Russell picked up his Young Director award in the Broadcast Europe category at the Commercial Film Producers of Europe’s Young Directors Awards in Cannes .

Director Smyth’s credits include ‘Sleeveface’, the Eircom television advertisement which features iconic album sleeves substituted for people’s faces, and the AIB television advert, which shows surfers in the west of Ireland.
