Irish writer Danny Stack picked up the Best Horror Short award at the London Independent Film Festival last week for his supernatural short ‘Origin’.
The festival ran from April 12-23, and gives special attention to first and second-time directors and films shot under budgets of €123,000 (£100,000).
‘Origin’ tells the tale of a mother who attempts to keep her family together after her son is bitten by a mysterious creature in the woods. Despite ‘Origin’ being writer Danny’s first foray into filmmaking, he didn’t shy away from the task on hand, filling up both the director and producer roles himself. He created UK-based production company Silverdale Films for the shoot, and shot ‘Origin’ over four days in Bournemouth with a Super 16mm.
Paul Sarony (Three and Out) was the executive producer and David Raedeker (Misfits) the director of photography. David Fisher (Neverland) edited the short with Danny.
Katy Carmichael (Waterloo Road) and Lee Ross (Titanic) starred in the short, with Jack Blumeneau, Alex Avery and Peter Landi also featuring. ‘Origin’ has already screened at Raindance Film Festival and the London Short Film Festival, and Danny has made a deal with Network Ireland TV to distribute ‘Origin’ both nationwide and internationally.
Cork-native Danny is currently based in Bournemouth, where he is working on scripts for Monster Entertainment’s ‘I’m a Creepy Crawly’, as well as working on post-production with UK-based White Lantern Films for his next short ‘After School Club’.
