Irish short ‘Cairdeas’ is the second Irish film selected for a screening at the Newport Beach Film Festival this weekend. ‘Cairdeas’ joins Irish feature film ‘Songs for Amy’, which IFTN announced earlier this month had been chosen to screen at the festival on Tuesday May 1.

‘Cairdeas’, a production of Big Idea Films, based in the west of Ireland, is a five-minute short starring Eamonn Draper and the late Mick Lally (Glenroe). The role was written with Lally in mind, and was the last film he ever shot. Kevin Glynn of Big Idea Films and Ronan O’Conghaile shot the film on XD CAM EX letus, while James Finlan (Killinaskully) edited. Ger Fahy (Lord of the Dance) composed an original score.

‘Cairdeas’ tells the story of the friendship between two elderly men who meet each day in their local pub for a game of chess. The short was broadcast on TG4 in September of 2010, and was officially selected for the NYC Filmmakers Festival in 2011.

It will screen at Newport on Sunday April 29. Writing on his website, Big Idea Films Founder Kevin Glynn said, “I was delighted to be informed my short film ‘Cairdeas’ has been selected for this very prestigious festival. I had heard this is probably the best festival in the world.”

‘Songs for Amy’ will screen on Tuesday May 1 at the festival, ahead of its official selection at the Galway Film Fleadh this July. The Newport Beach Film Festival takes place in California from April 26-May3 2012.
