Head of Department, Dr Adele Commins and Lecturers from the BA (Hons) in Film and Television Production recently met with Course Ambassador and Hollywood Director, John Moore, to discuss the future direction of the programme and course development.

Considering Covid and the prevalence of online filmmaking, the team and John recognize the need to constantly innovate so to remain at the forefront of new techniques and technologies.

“The students you teach have skills, they have talents, they have a ‘something’,” said Moore when speaking at the meeting. “We need to be more grounded in our approach to applying their drive and skills to a target they can actually hit. Third level needs to teach more kids to shoot for YouTube and Instagram than they currently do.”

Development is currently underway to progress a new part-time programme that embraces all aspects of online content creation, including Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube. With its world class facilities and industry contacts, DkIT is uniquely positioned to deliver such a course.

Cinematography Lecturer, Lorcan Dunne, will also be hosting a panel discussion concerning online practical filmmaking as part of the Film School Network in Italy on December 5.

The Film School Network (FSN) is a networking project, which aims to promote the exchange of ideas and practices surrounding Film Education between film schools all around the world. The main purpose of the project is that of creating a wider, transnational knowledge around filmmaking, in order to better train the future members of the industry.

Dunne is the DkIT Project Leader for the FSN and had this to say about the future direction of the course: “At DkIT we are constantly investing in new technology and staff training. Just recently, a number of my colleagues became certified Blackmagic Design Trainers. Blackmagic is a world leader in Digital Cinema Cameras, Colour Grading, and Editing software”.

“Due to our state-of-the-art infrastructure, we are also being considered as a Blackmagic Learning Partner,” continued Dunne. “All my colleagues are experts in their fields, and we continue to consult with John and Screen Skills Ireland to ensure the film course remains relevant and to provide our students with the best career prospects after they graduate."
