Creators of Belfast-Based SYFY Series 'Krypton' Reveal Long-Term Plans for Show
10 Jan 2018 : Nathan Griffin
With a series-order already given to Limerick-based SYFY series ‘Nightflyers’ late last year, executive producer of ‘Krypton’, David Goyer has recently divulged that the creators of the new Superman prequel have a “seven-to-eight-year plan” for the show.

‘Krypton’ which is being predominantly filmed in Belfast, Northern Ireland is said to have moved away from Vancouver to give a more unique look to the show, and to set it apart from the other DC shows, which are  currently being shot in Vancouver.

The arrival of ‘Krypton’ marks the first production to be welcomed into the new Belfast Harbour Studios, which cost £20 million to develop the 8 acre site, located on the 340 acre Giant’s Park. The complex consists of two film studios, workshops which can facilitate project set construction, as well as, separate production offices for the accommodation of art departments, dressing rooms and wardrobe functions.

Set two generations before the destruction of the legendary Man of Steel's home planet, ‘Krypton’ follows Superman's grandfather (Cameron Cuffe, ‘The Halcyon’) - who’s House of El was ostracized and shamed - as he fights to redeem his family's honour and save his beloved world from chaos.

Speaking after the announcement of the deal with SYFY, Chairman of Belfast Harbour, David Dobbin said:

“Welcoming our first tenant to Belfast Harbour Studios is very exciting for us. Working with Northern Ireland Screen and hosting visits from many production companies has shown there is a need for a facility like this. Supporting the regional economy is one of our strategic goals and enhancing Northern Ireland’s media offering is very much part of this. We look forward to working with Warner Horizon and further enhancing Northern Ireland’s reputation in the film industry.”

Created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, ‘Krypton’ is executive produced by David S. Goyer (‘Man of Steel’, ‘The Dark Knight trilogy’) through his Phantom Four production company. Damian Kindler (‘Sleepy Hollow’) will also serve as executive producer and showrunner.

Irish director Ciaran Donnelly (‘Vikings’) is also executive producer and director on a number of episodes. In addition to Cameron Cuffe, the show also stars Georgina Campbell (‘Broadchurch’), Elliot Cowan (‘Da Vinci’s Demons’), Ann Ogbomo (‘World War Z’), Rasmus Hardiker (‘Your Highness’), Wallis Day (‘Will’), Aaron Pierre (‘Tennison’) with Northern Irish actors Ian McElhinney (‘Game of Thrones’) and Paula Malcomson (‘The Hunger Games’) also featuring.

Speaking about the show, executive producer Geoff Johns said:

“This is an untold story and time travel is involved. History could be changed and what happens in this story can be very different from the backstory people know.”

‘Krypton’ is being produced by Phantom Four in association with Warner Horizon Scripted Television for the SYFY channel, and will premiere on March 21st, 2018.
