AirSpeed Telecom is a leading provider of high performance telecommunications products and services to enterprise, public sector and SME business. Founded in 2003, the business has built a carrier class network with extensive reach across Ireland and with peering and interconnect arrangements internationally. The firm is dedicated to customer service quality and has expertise in in integrated fibre and licensed wireless (microwave) networking. They provide a full suite of premium quality telecommunications services to businesses in all industry sectors.

Recently, AirSpeed provided a crucial service to the National Marine Litter Forum organised by the Coastal & Marine Research Centre (CMRC), University College Cork held on the 2nd of April. The event, which was held in the Morrison Hotel in Dublin, had international significance as it was the first of 12 marine litter fora being held across Europe as part of an FP7 European funded project called Marlisco.

A live broadcast/webcast was transmitted online to satellite groups from around Ireland via AirSpeed Telecom. AirStream is the name of the new live video streaming service – as an adaptive streaming system, it automatically recognises the device that it’s going to and changes format accordingly, so it can be viewed on all multi-devices. Audio and video quality, as well as uninterrupted transmission, is guaranteed because AirSpeed provides the service over uncontended bandwidth using IP and high-end MPEG4 encoders. The forum was thus broadcast not only to Ireland but also to members in Europe.

Another part of the forum involved 15 satellite groups, each with around 10 people, established around Ireland to take part virtually on the day, as well as a live audience and panel of experts. The CMRC required some interactivity from the satellite groups, thus AirSpeed established a voting system to be set up for the forum and a chatbox so questions from the satellites could be given to panel of experts. The questions were filtered by Sean Moncrieff from NewsTalk, who facilitated the forum. The multi-device video experience was not only for laptops but for iPads, iPhones, etc.

Roisin Hannigan, who is responsible for heading up the live video streaming service that has been developed over the last few years, says the event “went really well, it was a great success both for the forum and as far as the video stream went.” As it was the first time this type of technology was integrated into their forums, “it was very important to them because they had to set the bar for their European counterparts as each of the 11 European countries will have to go forward now and do the same.

“We’re very much a high-end product, and it is very much broadcast quality that we deliver. The HD picture, sound etc. all went quite seamlessly, the European counterparts were really impressed with it and it was a great success.” Not only this but the CMRC have now approached AirSpeed to negotiate developing a system for the eleven other countries: “AirStream now has our own CDN (content distribution network) which we have been developing over the past 6 months. We can take the stream into our CDN and distribute the stream back out so it can be viewed live from each European country via the Marlisco website on any device.”

Another indispensable service of AirSpeed is broadband. Roisin explains, “The difference between us and other providers is we have our own network, so for safety and security and reliability, it is done over the Airspeed network, so you’re not depending on some other broadband. For many conferences and events, if you’re depending on the broadband in the venue, and there’s a lot of other traffic going on in the building, there’s a high chance that the picture can drop. So we put in our own temporary link into every venue we are streaming from – it makes it more high-end, but it also definitely gives you that reliability that you’re not going to lose picture and sound, and it’s of broadcast quality.”

A recent event saw AirSpeed set up equipment to provide this service to the Morrison Hotel. Such was the success of the event that the equipment is being kept there and the AirStream service will be offered to hotel clients for meetings and events. AirSpeed is now in the process of talking to other hotels that carry the link about carrying this service.

The National Marine Litter Forum also saw the premiere of the short animation ‘Sources and Impacts of Marine Litter’ by Irish artist Jane Lee. It was developed in collaboration with the Marlisco project partners, and stimulated a lively panel discussion. The short is available to view below:
