Industry In Focus: Film Equipment Hire Ireland
03 Dec 2013 : By Kevin Cronin
Film Equipment Hire - leading suppliers of cameras and audio gear to the Irish film industry - are in the spotlight this week with a partnership role in ‘Turn It On’, in conjunction with Aerial Filming Ireland.

The technology demonstration will take place in Bewley’s Hotel, Ballsbridge, on 4th Dec from 3- 9pm, with further details in IFTN’s article here.

With anticipation growing for ‘Turn It On’, Film Equipment Hire’s Colin Browne took the opportunity to speak to IFTN this week about the origins of the company, his own background, and their commitment to supporting independent filmmakers in the country.

‘We want to bring new and innovative products to the Irish market and as part of that we have partnered up with Aerial Film Ireland to bring both the Cinestar 8 and Freely MōVI to market,’ Colin said. ‘The MōVI has created an awful lot of buzz and it could be one of the products that is termed a 'game changer' in how production sets are run and expands the possibilities of shot-making. It will be a very important tool in the years to come and anybody involved in the industry should take a look at it. We will be running ‘Turn It On’ to demo this new product along with a bunch of other gear and hopefully we can inspire people to come up with new ways of using this tool.’

Among the high-profile clients who have availed of Film Equipment Hire’s services to date are RTÉ, TG4, ITV, BBC, Channel 4, NBC, ABC, Discovery Channel, History Channel and PBS, along with many other production companies at home and around the world.

‘Our proximity to Dublin Airport allows foreign crews arriving in to call us when they have landed and we can be waiting outside arrivals when they get through,’ Colin added. ‘It’s all about the service.’

In keeping with the company’s commitment to be a ‘one-stop shop’ for film-makers, they stock a wide range of cameras including the Arri Alexa, Sony F5, Canon C300, Red Scarlet; Red Epic; Lenses including Canon Cinema Primes, Zeiss Cinema Primes; grip including Dollies, Cranes, Kessler Motion Control Sliders; lighting and audio equipment.

‘We are passionate about helping develop the film industry here in Ireland and offer students a 20% discount and assist smaller productions to ensure they have the right tools for the job within their budget,’ Colin continued. ‘At the recent Underground Film Festival we ran a small demo area and noticed we had supplied over 60% of the productions with equipment. It was very rewarding to see this and shows how much we are involved in the Independent Film Industry in Ireland.’

Colin explained that they approach every rental as a ‘collaboration’ and work within a client's budget to solve any problems that may arise and to source any items that they don’t normally stock.

‘Our vision is to bring the widest range of products to our customers and that they should have a great experience when renting. We have built an 800square foot studio at our facility with a 20 foot Green Screen Cyc wall. Our premises are covered in film memorabilia including a placard used in the movie 'Lincoln', signed by Steven Spielberg, Daniel Day Lewis and Sally Field.’

The origins of Film Equipment Hire can be traced back to Colin’s background as an engineer in the semi-conductor industry, during which time he worked primarily with high-end industrial cameras and optics.

‘I was travelling every week to different countries around the world. Then the children arrived, so I needed to look at changing career. I had been doing a lot of editing and camera work since the 90’s and decided I would set up my own production company and make a go at that. I started to buy a lot of my own equipment and was regularly asked by others if they could rent my gear. Out of that I started Film Equipment Hire Ireland in 2008.’

When Colin discovered the extent of the industry demand, he ramped up their investment in new equipment - placing the production end of the business on hold.

‘The editing studio I had built at the back of my house soon began to overflow with equipment so nearly two years ago we moved to our 2,000 square foot facility just off the M1 motorway six minutes from Dublin Airport.’

With no signs of slowing down over the next year, Film Equipment Hire’s plans include launching a new website; introducing a rewards scheme; investing in more new equipment; and developing an app which will allow customers to add items to a shoot list and email it in.

‘Although we offer a nationwide delivery service we hope to open up a facility on the west coast in the near future. We are very proud of what we have achieved so far and of the service we provide, we look forward to developing Film Equipment Hire Ireland in to a world class facility,’ Colin added.
