Awards winners for 2021 Catalyst International Film Festival announced

Paddy won Best Irish Short Film.
The 2021 edition of the Catalyst International Film Festival has come to an end with the award winners being announced on Sunday night.

Paddy, which follows a young man in 1970’s London trying to stay true to his Irish heritage, won Best Irish Short Film; directed by Róisín Kearney and written by Sinéad Collopy.

Best International Short Film went to Kindling, which follows two best friends who grew up in a trailer park together and have now completely grown apart; directed by Xinyi Zhu and written by Sheridan Watson.

The Best Documentary Award was won by Armour Off, directed by Anna Rodgers; a dance film capturing a performance by dancer Linda Fearon who has cerebral palsy. The winner of the inaugural Short Screenplay Award went to Katie McNeice for her Irish language script Focail, Baile, Croí.

“Catalyst International Film Festival is all about introducing diverse filmmakers to audiences and generating new audiences for those filmmakers, said Festival Founder and co-director,” Dr Susan Liddy. “It’s about amplifying the practice and debate around gender equality, diversity, and inclusion.”

“We want audiences to expect and demand films that speak to a diverse world. We’re very happy with Catalyst 2021. Not only have we found the perfect Ambassador in the wonderful Ruth Negga but the festival has generated enormous support and goodwill among filmmakers and the film community,” Dr. Liddy continued. “We’re determined to build on everything we have achieved this year and come back even stronger in 2021”

The Film Jury Panel included Barry Dignam, Niall McKay, Hannah Quinn, Cathy Brady, Dr Zélie Asava, and Irina Maldea, while the Screenplay Jury Panel included Mark O’Halloran, Juanita Wilson, Ailbhe Keogan, and Paddy Slattery.

List of award winners as follows: 

  • Best Irish Short: PADDY
  • Best International Short: Winner - Kindling (USA)
  • Best Documentary: Armour Off (IRL)
  • Spirit of the Festival: To All My Darlings (IRL)
  • Jury Special Mention – Stray (USA)
  • Best Short Screenplay:  Winner - Focail Baile Croí  (Katie McNeice)
