Whit Stillman’s acclaimed ‘Love & Friendship’, John Carney’s ‘Sing Street’ and Yorgos Lanthimos’ ‘The Lobster’ feature in Indiewire’s highest grossing speciality films of 2016 this week.
The standout feature inspired by an early Jane Austen novella looks set to outtake Lenny Abrahamson’s Oscar-nominated ‘Room’ at the global box office, with the current gross standing at approximately $13.5M.
Standing at number four, ‘Love & Friendship’ distributed by Roadside Attractions stands at a current gross of $13,465,625.
The period comedy which was shot in Ireland maintains a steady 99% on rotten tomatoes and looks set to overtake Oscar-nominated ‘Room’, which grossed an estimated $15M at the US box office. Speaking to IFTN earlier this year, Stillman praised the location as follows:
“It was absolutely ideal. This is the best place I have ever shot a film, definitely the best crew I have ever worked with. Any project I could possibly shoot in Ireland in the future, I will definitely shoot them here.”
Also featuring in Indiewire’s list is ‘The Lobster’, the Ireland-Greece co-production partially shot in Co. Kerry holds a current gross of $8,286,374. John Carney’s musical drama ‘Sing Street’ also stands at $3,217,627. This comes after the re-release of the film on July 4th, following a decision to extend the initial domestic run by distributors The Weinstein Company
