Irish film ‘The Lobster’ will be released to US cinemas on May 13th, being distributed by A24, the same company who released Oscar-nominated Irish film ‘Room’.
A24 picked up the film from Alchemy at Berlin last month, promptly postponing Alchemy’s planned US release date of March 11th. Alchemy originally acquired the film after Cannes last year where it won a Special Jury Prize as well as receiving highly positive reviews.
‘The Lobster’, supported by the IFB, stars Colin Farrell, Rachel Weisz and John C. Reilly and is set in the near future where being single is outlawed. Obeying the laws of the time, Farrell’s character checks himself into a hotel where he has 45 days to find a mate or else be turned into an animal.
Shot in Parknasilla in Co. Kerry in Spring 2014, the film has been acclaimed by critics and made over €1 million in Ireland and the UK during its’ theatrical run last year. Aside from the Jury Prize at Cannes, the film has been nominated for five EFA Awards, seven BIFA Awards and a BAFTA Award. Colin Farrell has also recently just been nominated for an IFTA Award for his lead performance in the film.
‘The Lobster’ is written by Yorgos Lanthimos and Efthimis Filippou and produced by Ed Guiney, Lee Magiday, Ceci Dempsey and Yorgos Lanthimos. Executive Producers are Andrew Lowe, Tessa Ross and Sam Lavender. Element and Lanthimos are planning on collaborating again for ‘The Killing of A Sacred Deer’ and ‘The Favourite’, which are both in development.
