Warner Bros. Pictures will re-release the award-winning historical epic ‘Michael Collins’ period in a new digital format from March 18th. The film will be screened in 60 cinemas across Ireland.
The Oscar and BAFTA nominated film is directed by Neil Jordan (‘The Crying Game’, ‘Interview with a Vampire’) and stars Liam Neeson (set to be honoured at the upcoming IFTA Awards for his Outstanding Contribution to Cinema) as Michael Collins, one of Ireland’s most controversial patriots who leads his countrymen in their fight for independence.
The film was a critical and commercial success when it was released in 1996. It won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival and was also nominated for two Oscars (Cinematography for Chris Menges and Original Score for Elliot Goldenthal) and two Golden Globe Awards (Best Actor for Liam Neeson and Best Original Score for Goldenthal).
The film also stars Oscar winner Julia Roberts (‘Erin Brockovich’) as well as the late Alan Rickman. Irish actors in the film include Brendan Gleeson, Stephen Rea and Aidan Quinn.
‘Michael Collins’ has also recently been released on Blu-Ray (March 4th) in a 20th Anniversary Edition re-mastered with the addition of a new specially recorded Intro and Commentary by director Neil Jordan.
