‘An Crann’ and ‘Sineater’ accepted for Cannes Short Film Corner

Irish-language short film ‘An Crann’ and Bertie Brosnan’s new film ‘Sineater’ have both been accepted for the 2015 Cannes Short Film Corner.

After a successful kickstarter campaign and the long process of script to screen, ‘An Crann’ by Emma Carlson is going to Cannes.

The film, which was shot in location in Glenties Co. Donegal is a transatlantic project, with a crew comprised of recent graduates from both New York University's Tisch School of the Arts and the National Film School at IADT Dún Laoghaire.

‘An Crann’ is based on Núala Ní Dhomhnaill’s poem of the same name and tells the story of Brendan and Aisling, a retired couple who live together in Donegal. Their lives are relatively uneventful… until one day, a strange new neighbour chops down their tree. When Aisling informs their neighbour of her mistake, the woman invites Aisling to cut down one of her trees in retaliation. Brendan relishes the opportunity for payback, whilst Aisling is determined to forgive and forget. But the woman continues to wheedle her way into the couple's lives, and soon Aisling is forced to make a hard choice.

The film stars veterans of the Irish screen and stage Bairbre Ní Caoimh, Liam Burke and Nichola MacEvilly, in an Irish language script by writer-director Emma Carlson, produced by Leeona Duff (IADT) and Luke Bean (NYU).

Bertie Brosnan’s ‘Sineater’ has also been accepted into the Cannes Short Film Corner and this is the second year in a row that the Kerry-based filmmaker is heading to Cannes after last year’s ‘Jacob Wrestling With The Angel’.

The film was shot in Tralee, County Kerry and was written and directed by Bertie Brosnan, produced by Brian O Connor and shot by Blaine Rennicks. The film stars Joe Mullins, Sean McGillycuddy, Jeanne O' Connor and Laura O' Loughlin.

Short documentary ‘Waterlillies’ for Dingle

Marmalade Films has announced that Tanya Doyle’s latest documentary ‘Waterlilies’ will screen as part of the Short Film Programme at the Dingle International Film Festival 2015, taking place this week from 12th- 15th of March.

A celebration of strong women in an ordinary situation, ‘Waterlilies’ is a meditation on identity and wisdom, exploring the changing role in a woman’s life with seven women in their sixties & seventies as they learn how to swim. In this documentary by IFTA nominated Tanya Doyle, the juxtaposition of straight talking poolside anecdotes with visually arresting underwater imagery transforms mere casual observations on growing old into a profound exploration of wisdom and what it means to grow and to change.

Writer/Director Tanya Doyle who shot the film over a number of years says: ‘From the outset I wanted the film to be a celebration of the ordinary, to look at something people do day-to-day and celebrate the little triumphs of life. At first I thought it would be very difficult to find women to take part in the documentary, but the openness with which each of the Waterlilies approached the film, shows the openness with which they approach everything in their lives.’

Speaking about the current relevance of the film, Producer Daniel Hegarty says: ‘Two of the swimming pools where we interviewed the women have since been closed due to lack of funding so we hope ‘Waterlilies’ can highlight the importance of public amenities and the difference they can make in peoples day to day lives.’

Shot in Dublin, ‘Waterlilies’ was written and directed by Tanya Doyle (‘The House’, ‘Bia Duchais’), produced by Daniel Hegarty (Marmalade Films), with original score from Sam Joseph Delves, cinematography by Colm Hogan and editing by Cara Holmes. ‘Waterlilies’ was the grateful recipient of an artist grant from Dublin City Council.
