Brendan O’Carroll’s family sitcom fends off competition from the likes of Doctor Who and Downton Abbey with two festive specials.
Mrs. Browns Boys returned to Irish and British screens over the Christmas period, beating out all other competition with both festive episodes of the popular sitcom receiving huge ratings. In Ireland, 800,000 viewers watched the Christmas Day special which culminated in the show’s now customary cast sing-a-long while 9.4 million BBC viewers tuned in the UK to see Brendan O’Carroll’s old-fashioned matriarch.
It was the third year in a row that O'Carroll topped the Christmas TV ratings for Irish viewers.
Meanwhile, the show’s New Years special was almost equally popular, attracting 8.7 million UK viewers. The IFTA & BAFTA winning series will return this summer as a full-length feature film, distributed by Universal Pictures with a release date set at June 27. The film was shot in Dublin last year in locations such as Smithfield and Moore Street.
